On day one of the first Los Angeles Unified School District teachers strike in 30 years, United Teachers Los Angeles President Alex Caputo-Pearl spoke to teachers and students gathered on a rainy Monday in Los Feliz.
Here we are on a rainy day in the richest country in the world, in the richest state in the country, in a state as blue as it can be, and in a city rife with millionaires, where teachers have to go on strike to get the basics for our students, Caputo-Pearl said.
The strike, originally scheduled to take place last Thursday, was delayed until Monday in hopes of reaching a last-minute deal.
Instead, more than 32,000 Los Angeles teachers and staff members walked off the job Monday, leaving about 600,000 students to wonder when they will see them again.

I wonder how many students know the definition of 'demagoguery'?
What is a Unified Teacher?
Lets look that up......
Hmmmmmmm......
Unify.....To bind.....
Ohhhhhh......

They cause less trouble that way.

> As the former President of the American Federation of Teachers famously said, Ill start worrying about the children when they start paying dues. <
That was Al Shanker. His statement was harsh. But it was also honest (a rare thing these days). And in a sense, Shanker was right. It was simply his job to advocate for the people who paid his salary. Just like it’s the job of your attorney to advocate for you.
A little story you might be interested in.
Many years ago, I went to a meeting where Shanker was the keynote speaker. After his talk, he opened the floor to questions. I’m not sure of the exact wording, but one exchange went something like this:
Questioner: “There are not enough minority teachers in our schools. Shouldn’t we advocate for a quota system?”
Shanker: “No. Our position is that the schools should hire the best candidates, period.”
If Shanker had said that today, he’d be out of office tomorrow.
80% of LAUSD students get free breakfast and lunch at school. That is the worst stat. We all know teachers who get their little classrooms ready with work and snacks for the parents on open houses and NOT ONE FAMILY SHOWS UP.
Im supporting the teachers right now because a) class sizes are too big and b) LAUSD been berry berry nice to me in 2018.
Yep and its the TAXPAYER that pays for all this crap..how many of the kids that go to LA Unified are here illegally..my bet is A LOT and we are paying for them
They want to furloughed vacation too!
But they should have planned better... Over there in DC metro area land nobody took vacation leave because they knew there was going to be a government shutdown - so now there’s a government shutdown they’re all taking their vacations and they didn’t use any vacation time and it’ll be paid for too!
I remember a strike in 1968, I think - we got a much better teacher as a scab.
No sweat California will give them the raise, then raise their taxes to pay for it. Net gain for teachers minus 5 %.
LA public schools I will wager are low security government institutions for people who don’t want to be there from the left half of the Bell Curve of the D party.
it was as ridiculous then as it is now.

The highest paid teacher receives $282,792.00.
Women and children hurt worst.
oh, wait...
I live in LA and wish to give you a post of support. Everything you posted is true.
What’s more, I’ve known Americans whose kids went to LA Unified and got beaten by other kids for being white and/or got short shrift from the teachers, (shuffled to a corner to read by themselves while the teachers worked with the Spanish-speaking students, for instance.)
I’ve also known people who worked for LA Unified as teachers or substitutes, and the horror stories would burn your ears. It’s downright child abuse to send your kid to LA Unified.
Un-f'n-believable! I went to the website to look at the numbers, and within a minute, I got a pop-up window asking me to donate to keep the project alive. As soon as I dismissed that, I get a pop-up ad... IN SPANISH!
Yes. What is illegal in LA is to ask families if they are here legally. Over 75% of the kids are Hispanic which doesnt tell us much, but you and I know that if you took out illegals and kids of illegals, there would be a far smaller %age. Though right now, being Hispanic is still an advantage nationally, which is why since we have to choose a nationality for our child we choose Hispanic over white. She is both and they force you to choose. It helps her school with diversity, ha ha Ha...
I cant find an LAUSD school around here that is not a charter school.
