Sen. Ted Cruz on Sunday joined a growing chorus of GOP lawmakers and other party officials condemning comments Republican Rep. Steve King of Iowa made in support of white nationalism.
"What Steve King said was stupid. It was stupid, it was hurtful, it was wrong. And he needs to stop it," the Texas Republican told NBC's "Meet the Press."
In a recent interview with the New York Times, King who served as the national co-chairman for Cruz's 2016 presidential campaign questioned why words like "white nationalist" are now considered racist.
"How did that language become offensive?" he told the outlet. "Why did I sit in classes teaching me about the merits of our history and our civilization?"
In a statement issued after the report was published, King rejected the suggestion he is an advocate for white nationalism. He later apologized on the House floor.
Alongside Cruz, Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, the only African-American Republican in the chamber, wrote in a recent op-ed that opinions like King's "damage not only the Republican Party and the conservative brand but also our nation as a whole.

I am a white.
I am a nationalist.
To condemn the joining of the two
is to play into the hands of those
who condemn them separately.
I won’t play into their hatred.
Ok. Whatever.
Go right ahead and then act astonished when you idiots that march out there saying how you are proud “White Nationalists” get raked over the coals, like you had no damn idea of the term as it has been used.
Go ahead and walk right into the hands of the left on it.
The MSM going to ask every Republican to own and disavow King while not asking a single Democrat about that Muslim POS within their ranks who called the President of the United States a M-F'er.
Cruz's answer was scripted boilerplate.
Fahrenheit 451 is here and we have Repubs vouching for it...
Ed
the ‘supremacist’ was, indeed, stupid on his part
That’s adorable.
I’m glad you embracing racism has been such a positive thing for you. /s
Ted Cruz demonstrates his adherence to the enemy’s cause of constantly redefining terms and conditions to suit themselves in the culture war.
Ted Cruz identifies himself as a friend of the enemy.
Racism, like sexual assault, is now so broadly defined it means nothing. If I’m going to be accused of it anyway, might as well accept the mantle and move on. Less aggro.
Even brilliant people make mistakes. I doubt he will grant them an interview from here on out. His constituents like him, and I am glad he supports the president. Just like President Trump as candidate Trump said he could walk into the street and shoot some one and his supporters would remain by his side, we didn't believe he actually meant what he said. We were smart enough to realize he was making a shocking analogy that no one who supported him believed he could or would actually do. His constituents must feel the same way. Quit acting like a liberal and quacking at the alter of political correctness. Ted Cruz needs to do the same.
“White” has been completely demonized. White is the Jew of Nazi Germany.
We need to talk more about racism, not less... ..
Not talking about it is the problem.
No, Ted. STFU! STOP undermining fellow Republicans. Just SHUT UP!
Why is this along with the yellow vest protests given no media time?

No. I understand who King is, and how he’s been thought of as something like a paragon of conservatism for years.
He’s also been an active member of Congress for many years, so don’t miss the significance of that.
But what he’s done here is to play into the hands of the deep state. They want racial conflict, and most important in their game is to make black people think they need to stay in the democrat party.
And yes, representative Steve King of Iowa has been something of an anti-Trumper, based on his public comments.
Trumps emergence on the scene has been real tough for those whose “conservative” credentials were manufactured during the pre-Trump era.
Conservatives should be patriots.
