Ted Cruz on Steve King's white supremacist comments: 'He needs to stop it'

Sen. Ted Cruz on Sunday joined a growing chorus of GOP lawmakers and other party officials condemning comments Republican Rep. Steve King of Iowa made in support of white nationalism.

"What Steve King said was stupid. It was stupid, it was hurtful, it was wrong. And he needs to stop it," the Texas Republican told NBC's "Meet the Press."

In a recent interview with the New York Times, King — who served as the national co-chairman for Cruz's 2016 presidential campaign — questioned why words like "white nationalist" are now considered racist.

"How did that language become offensive?" he told the outlet. "Why did I sit in classes teaching me about the merits of our history and our civilization?"

In a statement issued after the report was published, King rejected the suggestion he is an advocate for white nationalism. He later apologized on the House floor.

Alongside Cruz, Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, the only African-American Republican in the chamber, wrote in a recent op-ed that opinions like King's "damage not only the Republican Party and the conservative brand but also our nation as a whole.”

He is a gutless opportunist. He just can’t help himself.

Did you hear him say it?

Not trying to be snarky, but the translations from the Left are very poor these days.

I would have to have better proof than it was just reported.

Look, I’ll only defend the guy to a point. If he did say it, he was out of bounds clearly.

If he didn’t, we need to label the Times for what it did here.

This is all deep state theater.

Look at the larger context. What’s going on? The dems are losing black voters and it threatens to become unstoppable.

I believe this is proof King works for the deep state.

It’s why he opposed Trump’s candidacy.

You can listen to his speech on the floor and decide for yourself.

“I made a freshman mistake.”

“One phrase in that long article has created an unnecessary controversy. That was my mistake,” King said.

He isn’t a white supremacist or a racist, but it was a gaffe to take the NYT interview and ask this question to the NYT even if he meant it in a different way.

He stated that the White race has contributed more to Western Civilization than any other race has. I’m not sure anyone can actually disprove the truth in that.

Stating a fact, is not the same as saying the White Race is superior to all others. It’s merely recognizing a situation that I believe exists.

Does this mean all other races are inferior? I don’t consider it to mean that.

People around the planet have come up with some very important discoveries. Perhaps Western man was able to capitalize using all those discoveries better than anyone else did. The proof is in the pudding.

I respect people of all races, so I’m not here to claim my race is superior. Even if it were proven true, what is the point of gloating over it or acting the part of a superior individual based on it?

When folks start denigrating Whites, I do think it’s reasoned to remind folks of the amazing construct that is Western Civilization.

I don’t see anyone swarming to other nations in the same way they have Western Civilization.

China having accumulated all our patents, may be the next civilization to dominate.

And if it does, it will have the West to thank. And I’d say that in some ways to be somewhat like we may have done, accumulating knowledge and capitalizing on it.

I’d still say that more discoveries have been made by Western Civilization than any other, and the standard of living has reflected that.

At this point, it is up to us if we wish to surrender our leadership slot to China or not.

If not, we need to review our policies and quit allowing others to capitalize off our accumulated knowledge.

I do not think we have acted very judicious in our endeavors that have allowed others to simply take our knowledge.

White I do believe he misspoke when he addressed the White contribution to Western Civilization, and global mankind in the process, he did none the less say it.

Now, do we accept he is not actually a White Supremacist as he has later clarified, or do we strip him bare in public?

I note the same people who had no problem whatsoever with allowing Senator Byrd to remain in the U. S. Senate until his death, are now in the forefront of those attacking King.

Byrd was of course a unit President of a Klu Klux Klan group in his youth. He was a recruiter and very active. If a White Supremacist like that can be forgiven for a long concerted effort on behalf of White Supremacy, it would seem King could be forgiven for using poor judgement in his choice of words.

He didn’t participate in any Klan type activities, and it hasn’t been proven at all that he ever acted in a way to block a member of a minority from a work, political, or other group appointment, or for advancement.

I wish Ted would have said something along these lines and asked for folks to calm down and accept King’s explanation and apology.

He stated that he thinks all forms of mankind were created in the image of God. He said he rejects the concept of White Supremacy, in fact and deed.

I don’t defend what he said, but I do defend his right to be heard and forgiven.

As I posted on Townhall, the quote is too brief. King could be saying anything.

As a rule, I want three paragraphs: the paragraph containing the quote, the preceding and following paragraph. That’s usually enough. Anything less, is crap and does not deserve a response.

I was a Cruz supporter until he accused Trump of causing violence at his own rallies. Cruz needs to grow a spine and stop buying into false lib media-generated attacks on Republicans.

I am an American nationalist and proud of it too. Believing and supporting the Constitution makes one an American nationalist. There is no hope for the world without American nationalism because it provides the most liberty for its citizens of any nation.

You may not repudiate your ancestry but about half this forum will if they think it will get them group attaboys

It’s pathetic

A sizable group exist on this forum to impugne my southern history as low hanging fruit

And a few are not unsurprisingly on this thread

As well as a known pro amnesty bot from 2003-2007 who ran with howlin and sinkspur here when the theme was amnesty

Another lifetime ago

Free Republic has always had race ass kissers

It’s like being noble about race is their strongest emotional pull

Like being a faithful Christian used to be for many....a good thing unlike cultural and racial suicide

This crop of white people in the west are simply spineless and full of self loathing

This ex pro amnesty poster has a lot of nerve I’ll give em that

half of this forum will Far less. I've seen a significant change over the past couple of years. I think the amnesty and "we are the world" types would lose in a landslide if we polled it here. As for Cruz, he is a foreigner and acts like it, always siding with the Orcs of Mordor, whether they're rioting on the streets or scaling fences, over the American people.

Washington Examiner’s Williamson could have cited the many times the New York Times has been cited for using misquotes when assembling this as well as ask both US Senators Scott and Cruz “Can the New York Times under those circumstances be trusted” if they considered that when making their statements.

I didn’t hear all of his remarks. I will say that there’s nothing whatsoever wrong with being a White Nationalist “

People that call themselves that are not nationalists that just happen to be white.

They are folks like Richard Spencer and his crew.

So how about we not play dumb like some of you have just heard of this yesterday.
