As Shutdown Continues, Thousands Of Federal Workers Visit D.C.-Area Pop-Up Food Banks
NPR ^ | Jan 13, 2019 | Ian Stewart

Early Saturday morning, nearly 200 people stood in the freezing cold outside a Maryland supermarket waiting to collect a small allotment of free food.

They were federal employees, there to pick up fresh produce and canned goods from the Capital Area Food Bank, which organized five pop-up food distribution centers for government workers.

Yes it’s quick and easy to get a payday loan from them and if you repay them soon after you get your back pay you pay little or no interest. That way you can still pay your bills on time!

Typical government employees living check to check, and lacking the ability to plan.

Feds scrounging for food.

While Democrat leaders enjoy a luxury vacation and could care less if they can pay the bills.

What’s wrong with this picture?

Enough, already. Federal jobs except for these theatric shutdowns are stable, have benefits, and pay well. There’s no excuse for federal workers not having some money aside for when this happens, on a much too often basis. If they have any relationship with a bank at all, they can probably get a short term loan. How about helping lower-tier workers who lose their paychecks because it’s cheaper to hire invaders?

LOL - for some FedGov workers that’s right on. They don’t want to take 15-20 minutes to fill out a payday loan application (or they don’t know how to) and don’t want to pay them back when they get paid again! Getting free food is easier for them than being responsible and getting a quick low or no interest paycheck loan so you can still pay your bills!

Anyone remember NPR shedding tears over those driven to unemployment as Obama did his level best to put the entire coal industry out of business?

No, I don’t either. Stuff it, NPR!

You’re nor a bad person, but on Facebook and Instagram I have been told by people I do not know and am not friends with that I am horrible and have a terrible soul for mildly supporting the shutdown.

Cyclotic;
thats a tough story and I empathize with you. Did the “media” ever contact you for a hardship story about the Great Recession? I’m guessing not and you never complained to the “media” and you did the best you could for your family.

So to hear all the boo hoo hoo stories about the federal workers (who will get ALL their backpay when it is over) is just pathetic.

Washington DC never has a recession and the first time they miss a paycheck its like the end of the world.

I've been debating this same point with people. Most federal workers have been on the job a number of years, and are making a decent salary. If you've been responsible in managing your finances, and living within your means, there's no way you should be standing in a food line 48 hours after missing that first paycheck.

These are our "betters"! The ones dictating the way we live our lives!

(Roughly $120K per year is the average Federal paycheck in the MD-VA-DC metropolitan area.)

You are not! Neither am I! Lol

I don’t think I could care any less about “gubmint workers” as I do right now. They’re ALL leaches.

That’s just it.....apparently it’s now racist to expect someone to set aside funds for a rainy day, spend responsibly etc....

"I have been on strike for 6 to 8 weeks and I never went to food bank. Never got a handout!"

I think there's a mentality that goes with working for government, living in a big government environment and like the people in New Orleans during Katrina, expecting someone to come and make everything normal for you.

Something as simple as watching for sales on survival food websites should not escape someone just because they live in an urban area. We have a six month supply of freeze dried food and a water filtering unit that all cost less than $250.00. All we need if everything stops is a water source.

I know I shouldn’t expect much from the people I see standing in line, but how about they consider putting away a few bucks each payday for a possible future “rainy day”...

I use lean times to roll through my survival supplies. Then when better times return, I restock the supplies fresh. Perhaps they have been told, or at least suspect, this will be a long one. Would not surprise me that there are numerous long term plots afoot. And some might be a little more effective then a story about hookers peeing on Obama’s former bed.

Yes, that planning ahead thing can get you thru unexpected bad times. I got laughed at for hoarding food until we went thru four months of unemployment and never had a change in the way we ate. Hubby stopped laughing and now doesn’t say a word when I say we need a case of this or that to put in the pantry.
