Early Saturday morning, nearly 200 people stood in the freezing cold outside a Maryland supermarket waiting to collect a small allotment of free food.
They were federal employees, there to pick up fresh produce and canned goods from the Capital Area Food Bank, which organized five pop-up food distribution centers for government workers.

Why dont they just get low/no interest payday loans from a bank or their own credit union?
Thats what we did back in 1995 during the Clinton/Gingrich shutdown when I worked at the VA and we didnt get paid on payday due to the shutdown!
The hospital credit union gave any VA Employee a NO Interest payday loan who requested it. Just took your paystub down and they gave you a loan equaling your take home pay. As long as you paid it off 30 days after you got your back pay they didnt charge interest.
A sad commentary? I say it is BS. No one, not even the lowest paid Federal worker, is out of money 2 weeks and 2 days after they last got paid. I suspect it is more a case of “Hey! Free Food! I’ve gotta get me sum!”
Why dont they just get a low or no interest paycheck loan from a bank or credit union to tide them over till they get paid? Many banks and credit unions ARE offering low or no interest payday loans to FedGov workers affected by the shutdown - all they need to do is bring their paystub with them showing how much their take home pay is!
We did it back in 1995 during that shutdown!
“...Storm hits later today...”
Later today? We’ve already got 6 to 8 inches sitting on my front porch. There is more on the way?
I live just east of BWI. That ‘forecast’ calls for a total accumulation of 1 to 4 inches for the day (including last night when it started?). We’ve already got more than that.
It would be nice if some of them would volunteer at theSOME homeless food kitchen where Justice Kavanaugh and his family has volunteered for years. My family was part of a SOME team for years it Is a positive experience for all.
Too much work. Waiting on line for bread is cool and there is no obligation.
Bullschtein!
This is the height of shameless propaganda.
If the camera men were doing their job, you would see most of the take their free food and drive it home in their late model Mercedes.
Still, I can sense the Republicans falling for it as we speak.
I’ve been snowed in since yesterday morning.
Snowplow finally went through a couple hours ago, but I’m nice and toasty by the woodstove and making the hard decision about what to pull out of the freezer to cook
Chili yesterday, pork roast and dressing today, tomorrow -leftovers
A good idea. Credit Unions generally are easy to work with.
And here I thought they were going there to volunteer to help since theyre on a paid vacation.
Yes, this is an excellent point. Government is replete with very low calibre people who can not manage their own affairs yet we allow them to make decision that could affect the entire nation.
JoMa
IIRC The first check they missed wouldve been this past Friday. So two days without getting paid.
Wow!! How embarrassing!! Most, if not all on the line look very well fed, clothed and enjoy the benefits of being one of the Federal sheeple. I have a buddy who is employed by the FAA. Hes been out for over 3 weeks now. To make extra cash he repairs autos! How about the Democrats standing on the food line??? Thats their answer, give me more handouts!!!
No doubt these are the same low IQ Federal Employees who are constantly harassing my small business and wasting my time and money on absolutely stupid, intensely bureaucratic and useless requests that do nothing to promote the “safety” they claim to be advancing in their agency.
Apparently there's one that has Democrats out of work. Maybe they should call Nancy Pelosi and tell her to pay for the wall!
Sounds like you were living large! To be young again, eh?
Cry me a river. I could probably go 6 months without grocery shopping and eat very well every day. In fact this time of year, I probably don’t spend $20 a month on food as I have the freezer stocked, the garden harvest canned, and the pantry is full. I do this mainly because I hate going out in winter when it’s cold and dark. So I do this thing called P-L-A-N-N-I-N-G.
The “preppers” are the Army ants of life. The Gubmint workers look like the grasshoppers, who turn feet-up and die when they run out of food.
