Many Yellow Vests, whose protests grew from an objection to a “green” tax on fuel — now abandoned — which was seen as falling disproportionately on the non-metropolitan working class, see the country’s thousands of speed cameras as part of a “racket” designed to generate extra revenue for the state rather than preserving life, especially since the speed limit was dropped to 50 miles per hour on many roads in 2018.
They did indeed raise over a billion euros in fines in 2017, according to the Court of Auditors, and were expected to raise significantly more in 2019.

There was one north of me about 20 miles or so. Eventually it looked like they rigged the light where the electronic signs warning of a light change were just a little ....... too late. Yeah, basically on a highway.
That camera is gone now. I wonder how much money they raked in.

The Brits have been doing this for years! Their cameras are called GATSOs and the preferred method of disabling them is “setting them alight!” And to do so, they put a used tyre around the thing, fill it with diesel and “set it alight!” Since tyres supply their own oxygen and fuel by their nature, they are hard to put out.
A few years back my sister had a red light camera near her house. It was easy to tell that there was a camera there because of all of the pieces of car accidents strewn all over.
There are websites that chronicle the destruction of GATSOs.

What kind(s) of roads are those 50 mph (mph in France?) speed limits being imposed on? Is that supposed to be a “green” speed limit?
Back in the day, I suspected Reagan promising to axe the Federal mandate for 55 mph highway speed limits was worth 4-5% of his votes in the 1980 election!
