Senate Democrats on Thursday began a blockade of all legislation after Senate Republicans refused to consider two House-passed bills that would fund partially shut down government agencies without money for a border wall.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., on Thursday morning blocked the two bills that were introduced by the two Democratic senators from Maryland, where thousands of federal government workers reside. Democrats made it clear afterward that they wouldn't agree to take up any bills other than those to reopen the government.
Its my commitment to my federal workers and our country that the first order of business here should be the reopening of government, said Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md.
McConnell said there is no purpose to voting on the Senate-authored appropriations measures to reopen the government because President Trump will not sign them.
Cardin suggested there may be the votes to override a veto, which would require two-thirds majority support of both chambers. But Republicans have signaled so far they are standing behind Trumps insistence on funding for a border wall.
Democrats believe Republicans will begin to abandon Trump beginning Friday, when paychecks lapse for 800,000 federal workers impacted by the partial shutdown.
Your phones will all be ringing off the hook tomorrow when federal employees begin to miss that federal paycheck, Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md. said.

It happened in TX as well. I remember the dems renting hotel rooms in NM.
I think it was Wisconsin. The Socialist Slimes went across the border into Illinois, when they couldn't get their "across the aisle" way, and the Wisconsin senate didn't have a quorum.
Their plan to recall Walker backfired when he beat a bid to recall him.
Seems to me judges are already doing that,at least when it comes to countermanding Pres. Trump
Here’s hoping the govt will be shut down long enough to chase most of the affected employees into other careers, and to force the affected facilities to privatize.
Legally speaking, how exactly does the minority party “blockade” the Senate? I mean whats new that they weren’t already going to do?
It would. As for the rest: you gave me an excuse to snark at Big Media ...
Snark away! LOL
Fake news Amazon Post just said the groundwork for a declaration ot national emergency is being laid.
Could checkmate the Senate Democrats blockade.
When the Wall is built send ALL illegals home and give the DC people their jobs back - and the rest of Americans their jobs back too...
NO MORE SERVANT CLASS FOR 'ELITES' AT THE EXPENSE OF THE MIDDLE CLASS...
(Anyone who objects is a racist - - that'll make heads explode)
We’re both right...
Good people have been bailing out for years and I’d guess 2019 is going to be a real big year for those who’ve been on the fence about escaping the state. I’d bet on it.
It’s no longer just a joke about the pro-criminal Democrat party in Sacramento and the big population centers. They’ve become flat out scary.
“All they have to do is wait until Republicans jump ship and repudiate him.”
Unfortunately they know it will happen. RINO’s have no convictions to stand for so they fold like a cheap suit.
I never heard about Texas. It doesn’t surprise me, dems are dems no matter the state.
Right now, I really dont want any discourse with you. I am not feeling kindly and my Grandmother once told that that if I cant say anything nice, dont say anything at all.
Out!
Is the wall debate an excuse to shut down senate so no judges can be confirmed?
Glad to hear it. We shouldn’t let them skate on anything.
Trump may yet order the Army Corps of Engineers to begin construction under his state of emergency order. But the budget impasse needs to develop a little bit further. If the GOP senate begins to cave, I suspect the order will go out.
The Senate needs to confirm judicial and other appointments.
McConnell needs to do whatever it takes to do the above.
