Democrats shut down the Senate

Senate Democrats on Thursday began a “blockade” of all legislation after Senate Republicans refused to consider two House-passed bills that would fund partially shut down government agencies without money for a border wall.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., on Thursday morning blocked the two bills that were introduced by the two Democratic senators from Maryland, where thousands of federal government workers reside. Democrats made it clear afterward that they wouldn't agree to take up any bills other than those to reopen the government.

“It’s my commitment to my federal workers and our country that the first order of business here should be the reopening of government,” said Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md.

McConnell said there is no purpose to voting on the Senate-authored appropriations measures to reopen the government because President Trump will not sign them.

Cardin suggested there may be the votes to override a veto, which would require two-thirds majority support of both chambers. But Republicans have signaled so far they are standing behind Trump’s insistence on funding for a border wall.

Democrats believe Republicans will begin to abandon Trump beginning Friday, when paychecks lapse for 800,000 federal workers impacted by the partial shutdown.

“Your phones will all be ringing off the hook tomorrow when federal employees begin to miss that federal paycheck,” Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md. said.

I guess I need a civics lesson. So what if some of the dems refuse to work? Are all 47 of them staying home?

I read that Cher told Pelosi, “This is not the hill to die on.” I think the Democrats are making a mistake. I am reminded of Napoleon saying, “Never interrupt your opponent when he is making a mistake.” (Oh, excuse me. My popcorn’s done.)

I'm with the democrats on this one (sort of!).

We should take up a House bill that was just passed, put in the money for border security, including $10B or $20B for the Wall, and vote on it. [If that's not "allowed", replace the entire bill with a Homeland Security funding bill that includes $10B to $20B in funding for the Wall - the same legislative trick the thugs used to create the unconstitutional Obamacare law.] I'll bet the globalist party will vote in lockstep to keep FedGov shut down if the alternative is protecting real Americans.

Either way, America's elected Senate will be considering one or both of the socialist House's two bills.

President Trump should veto any bill that comes with democrat pork in it. He should hold out until they convert pork barrel spending to pay the full cost of a wall from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean, plus maintenance costs.

That won’t work. The House is not going to come up with his 5.7 bil.

Dems in Texas (I think) pulled that stunt a few years back. They simply disappeared.

Democrats don’t care and believe they will win. Trump will cry uncle by Friday.

They’re going for broke.

Someone on twitter photo shopped Kate’s face alongside the image of that horrible Navarro bitch on CNN filing her nails while a guest talked about crimes by illegal immigrants. Heartbreaking but absolutely perfect.

Dems in Indiana legislature tried that stunt years ago (left the state and set up shop in Illinois) and it backfired bigtime. Now we have Rep supermajority.

Pelosi and Schumer don’t care. At the end of day, they believe Trump will cave.

They think he will blink first and throw in the towel.

Executive Order, border security is a national emergency crisis. Begin building and funding wall.

There ya go.

All presidents can declare just about anything a national emergency. They have all extended many prior presidents national emergencies as well.

Now that Trump is in the exact godam same rules apply.

“....The Senate can now focus on judicial appointments”
**********************************************************
Yep, their HIGHEST PRIORITY needs to be FILLING ALL JUDICIAL VACANCIES..

FOR THIS YEAR I’d like to see the Republican Senate and the President work so, by the end of the calendar year, we’ll be able to count the number of remaining judicial vacancies on one hand.

BOTH the Senate and President Trump need to get cracking to QUICKLY fill the MANY VACANCIES on US federal judgeships. There are over 140 vacancies of which around 70 had nominees pending in the last Congress. But there were around 70 for which Trump had not yet submitted nominees.

https://www.uscourts.gov/judges-judgeships/judicial-vacancies/current-judicial-vacancies

And there are other judgeships where near-future vacancies are known. These also need nominations in the pipeline.

https://www.uscourts.gov/judges-judgeships/judicial-vacancies/future-judicial-vacancies

I hope President Trump (and Lindsey Graham, the new Judiciary Committee Chairman) give this effort the URGENCY it needs.
