Federal workers demand end to government shutdown at White House protest
Washington Post ^ | 01/10/2019 | Marissa J. Lang

Hundreds of furloughed federal workers, contractors, union representatives and supporters gathered in the brisk wind and bitter cold Thursday to demand government leaders “end this shutdown.”

Leaders of the National Federation of Federal Employees said they hoped that bringing federal workers to the president’s doorstep would show him whom the shutdown has hurt most. President Trump, though, wasn’t there to see them, having left earlier in the day to visit the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas.

“We want to send a very strong message — that this is not about politics, it’s about getting people back to work,” said Brittany Holder, a spokeswoman for the NFFE and a protest organizer. “A lot of the county thinks federal workers are all here in the D.C. area, but it’s only 15 percent. If you’re living paycheck to paycheck to make ends meet, and suddenly the paychecks stop? People are feeling really stressed and anxious, and they want to know when this will end.”

Protesters, who packed the street outside the AFL-CIO building on 16th Street NW, held signs that declared “I want to go back to work,” and “Congress: Do your job so we can do ours.” The protest came on the 20th day of a partial shutdown that has left nine federal departments and several agencies closed since Dec. 22.

The group began to march about 1:20 p.m. to the White House, calling on Trump to reopen the government with or without funding he has requested for a border wall.

RE: So, the DEMOCRAT Union is demanding that Trump give in to the Democrats???

Yes, they never demand that Pelosi/Schumer give in to Trump ( who has the more reasonable stance ).

In a former life, I worked for the state and was a member of a a government employee union-AFSCME-when the union says jump, members just ask how high...

The union strong-armed them into this phony “protest”-unlike when they go on strike, they will get their back pay as soon as the dust settles...

No kidding.

Let ‘em pound sand.

Give them the addresses of Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer.

That’s where the real problem is.

Ask them what they do when they are on strike?

They're forbidden from striking. Remember the air traffic controllers and Reagan?

You'd think these people would be salivating over the idea of $5+ billion in government spending for a wall.

Am I missing something?

Nancy can end the shutdown in a minute. All she has to do is approve the $5 Billion. It’s a small amount and if she cared about the working people she would end it.
