Fake News.

Once again we have a Fake Headline that is totally contradicted by the truth and the facts contained under the headline.

What does Trump believe is the endgame here?

To declare a national emergency and make every attempt to have the military make progress on protecting the border.

If he thinks the messaging here is a waste of time, why did he force the shutdown in the first place?

Because the previous funding bills expired on December 21st. He forced the shutdown so he could make it seem like the Democrats are the problem ... when in reality there is no political will for border security among most Republicans, either.

Trump will have plenty of opportunities to give more speeches.

Pelosi and Schumer might have spent their ammo.

I believe the reason President Trump didn’t do this shut down when the Republicans ran things was because Paul Ryan had promised him that he would begin impeachment proceedings.

This point is right on target, and it supports my previous post here on this thread:

He’s been president for nearly two years, and up until last week, Republicans controlled both chambers of Congress. At any point during that two years, Republicans could have passed a bill to fund the border wall, and he could have gotten at least $5.6 billion.

Uh -- this shutdown DID start when the Republicans still controlled the House and Paul Ryan was still the Speaker.

Stop making things up. It takes 60 votes in the Senate.

Get real. The dynamic the 1st 2 years would have been the same as in the lame duck session: a Democrat filibuster and government shutdown.

Isn't there a 2/3's majority to pass in the Senate?
This is why the Dems dug in.

“It’ll have to end soon and it’ll do so without him getting $5 billion for the wall but he can protect his right flank by showing MAGA Nation that he did everything he could to prevail.”

Donald Trump is not the type to commit suicide by stupidity.

“What does Trump believe is the endgame here? Conway, Sanders, and Shine urged him to do the speech and visit the border because they recognized that the shutdown standoff is all about POTUS communicating his resolve to his base. It’ll have to end soon and it’ll do so without him getting $5 billion for the wall but he can protect his right flank by showing MAGA Nation that he did everything he could to prevail.”

That better not be the case. It will be the best way to ensure that he is a one-term, failed, President (even with the economy doing very well) - because enough of the base simply won’t show up, leading to a bunch of 2016 narrow victories turning into 2020 narrow losses.

“The government will need to re-open soon to stop these trends and the only way that happens without the president losing face is if he uses an executive decree to seize funds from the Pentagon to begin construction.”

I would not only MUCH prefer this solution, I believe that it is what is going to occur. Trump is not the type of person to accept failure and then try to paper it over with some BS indications of success. If he has a tool available to him, he WILL use it.

I believe that Trump will do his utmost to get the Dems to the table for serious negotiations, but he knows that they will not bite. So he is planning to use a Declaration of Emergency as the last resort, after having laid out why it was necessary and giving the Dems every possible chance to compromise. It’ll be a big victory - both for the country as illegal immigration begins to be significantly curtailed, and for Trump on a political level as the guy who gets things done (and done legally, too, unlike Obama).

I think his number one priority was getting the funding to rebuild the military. I don’t know if he could have gotten both because he still didn’t have 60 votes in the Senate. Government doesn’t work like business, and I’m sure he’s gotten bad advice.

Just cut off welfare/food stamps for illegal aliens..that pays for the wall itself, easy peasy, doesn’t cost taxpayers or Mexico one red cent

It takes 60 votes in the Senate.

The author is 100% right on this. If the Republicans wanted the wall, they would pass it through a reconciliation process that only needed 51 votes.

McConnell has held the line on requiring 60 votes because he doesn't even have 50 votes.

He just tweeted that he offered to re-open the government to Pelosi if they agreed to discuss border security including a wall. She supposedly said no.

What a CF
