A majority of Americans support President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops fighting in Syria and Afghanistan, according to a Tuesday Politico poll.

Twenty-five percent of Americans strongly support the decision to bring home troops from Afghanistan and Syria, and 31 percent somewhat support the decision, according to the poll. Only 11 percent strongly oppose the decision to bring home U.S. troops, and 16 percent somewhat oppose the decision. Just under 20 percent aren’t sure what Trump should do.

The president has sought to bring home troops from Syria since April. Trump announced in December that he would bring home 2,000 troops in Syria and roughly 7,000 of the 14,000 American soldiers in Afghanistan, according to The Atlantic.

Plenty of neocons like Graham, Rubio, etc. who support staying in Syria and Afghanistan. Mattis left because he wanted a US military presence in both places. And Trump is getting resistance from Bolton on the decision.

If we can’t define what victory is and work towards that end there is no reason to deploy in the first place. We will send our military to defend the border of any country but our own to fight and die for people who will not fight for their own people, nation and culture.

This doesn't stop the advocates of permanent occupation and nation-building from claiming that they represent the interest of "the American people" and "national security" when their agenda has nothing to do with either.

The President needs to follow his own instincts and those of his base here resolutely and ignore the nay-saying by neocons and establishment Republicans in his cabinet.

Too bad Trump isn’t being allowed to implement his decisions. His orders are being sabotage and outright disobeyed. This needs to be fixed ASAP.

Well, believe he does have authority to take the funds already allocated to the army and move it internally to the Corps of Engineers.

This is what I don't understand. Trump ran on a foreign policy agenda opposed to neocons, but he wound up surrounding himself with neocon and pro-establishment advisors and spokesmen like Nimrata Haley, John Bolton, etc. Mattis wasn't a neocon (more of a realist) but was still unwilling to implement Trump's foreign policy agenda, and I doubt his replacement will either.

There aren’t many places to go to get foreign policy experts that aren’t CFR neocons. Just the State department has 25,000 employees.

Trump ran and was elected as somebody outside the political establishment. He should have picked foreign policy advisors who are outside the establishment as well. Initially he did so to a point - Steve Bannon was a senior advisor until spoiled brat couple Javanka had him thrown out of the White House for not kissing their feet.

The Establishment is just that, the Establishment. Their tentacles are everywhere. They have the experience and the connections, which is why they dominate the pool of possible selections. Trump would have to pick a total outsider who would have a difficult time getting confirmed. Draining the swamp is not easy. Trump can’t clean the Augean stables in a single day.

That basically is 2 support to 1 opposed. My guess that 27% that oppose are made up of do gooder nation builders, and general warmongers among the Democratic base.

Remember the “hearts and minds” bullshit from Bush - while citizens of Bagdad were strafing Apache helicopters at the start of the Iraq War. Yeah we really had their hearts and minds.
