This doesn't stop the advocates of permanent occupation and nation-building from claiming that they represent the interest of "the American people" and "national security" when their agenda has nothing to do with either.

The President needs to follow his own instincts and those of his base here resolutely and ignore the nay-saying by neocons and establishment Republicans in his cabinet.
