National parks are a voluntary participation activity. No disclaimers or warnings to spoil your free spirited, explorative nature.

Amen to THAT!!

I was watching the fireworks over Lake Powell one July Fourth evening at THIS overlook at Page, AZ.

https://www.google.com/maps/@36.92442,-111.47834,1183m/data=!3m1!1e3

A storm had passed through the area just minutes before and I sure wish I hadn’t been wearing shorts!!

The fireworks were like children’s sparklers, compared to the FIREWORKS!! GOD was providing with the storm off to the north of the dam and lightning flashing an enormous backdrop to Man’s puny display!

It’s a shame Democrats would go to the trouble of killing Americans in their quest to not protect America’s borders; but Democrats being evil is nothing new.

But that’s not the worst of it!

Today, on the twelfth day of the shutdown, a star went supernova in another galaxy!!!

The WashinCIA Post has long been execrable, but even at their worst, they were never this transparent.

You're absolutely correct. Many of us who have visited that area know that Horseshoe Bend is unchanged and unprotected. There are no guardrails or guidelines to keep the overly curious or careless from going over the edge.

We all mourn the loss of innocent lives here. This is a horrific accident. The family will never recover from such a needless loss.

Regardless, there would have been no difference made had the government been open. We never saw any sign of rangers in the area, it was all tourists, many taking stupid chances stepping out on unsupported, brittle rock ledges.

I have a photo of one fat lady who walked out on an outcrop. You can guess why I took the photo. I've taken many photos of strangers I felt would serve as 'before' photos for the purpose if identifying the body later. She was fine, but the ledge was so thin, had it been any weaker the whole thing might have broken off and gone in. Sometimes it is dumb luck that protects people. I wish it had played a role the day of this incident.

I have a photo of one idiot at the Grand Canyon. On the bright angel trail there is a stone portal. About 30 feet out on the ledge is a circular hole. The drop is about 400 feet there by my estimate. This fellow decided to crawl through the hole from the other side. My wife and I watched as he crawled through. His GF was screaming at him the whole time and he was laughing. Once he got through he had about 15 feet of ledge to cross to get back to the safety of the trail.

About 5 feet from the hole the ledge under his feet crumbled and fell into the canyon. He barely, and it was a long second... barely caught a handhold before falling into the canyon. His GF went silent. He caught himself and terrified, made the last few feet feet to safety. He got back to the trail. A small crowd had gathered watching horror. No one said a word to him. His GF simply turned her back on him and walked up the trail. Wish I had it on video...frosty!

Many decades ago, at the University of Maine, I took a forestry course. The primary textbook was “One-Third of the Nation’s Land” or something similar. The premise was that the federal government owns one-third of our nation’s land. One-third. Way too much, wouldn’t you agree?

No clue. That first slam into the protruding shard of granite didn’t look healthy. He had his helmet and knee pads on tho so he probly just rubbed some dirt on it and shook it off.

Literally!

We finally got below the snow and the plow uturned and went back up; plowing the other side.

I had ice encrusted on my pant leg about 1/2” thick.

Stayed for about an hour thawing out at a roadhouse about halfway down the hill.

Thanks for the info. Looks like his chute or para-sail didn’t fully deploy, went down pretty fast. Hard to tell if he’s trying push himself away from the cliff face or grab on in a vain attempt to save himself.

Most of the deaths in RMNP are from falling off of mountains.
Particularly Longs Peak.

For the past century, the National Park Service has emphasized the personal responsibility of visitors to follow rules and know the risks.
The agency's policy, according to spokesman Jeff Olson, is that it "can't fence off everything."

But what happens when more park visitors are outdoor novices, unaware of the intrinsic risks in wilderness?

"We have more visible incidents of people not following the rules and getting themselves into trouble or getting into a situation with the wildlife,"
Olson acknowledged, before adding: "We can't and we won't post signs every 10 feet along a boardwalk or a trail."
