The scale of the dramatic collapse of the Indonesian volcano that led to last Saturday's devastating tsunami in the Sunda Strait is becoming clear.
Researchers have examined satellite images of Anak Krakatau to calculate the amount of rock and ash that sheared off into the sea.
They say the volcano has lost more than two-thirds of its height and volume during the past week.
Much of this missing mass could have slid into the sea in one movement.
It would certainly explain the displacement of water and the generation of waves up to 5m high that then inundated the nearby coastlines of Java and Sumatra.
ndonesia's disaster agency says more than 400 people are confirmed dead with 20 or so still missing. In excess of 40,000 have been displaced.

How much CO2 did it put into the air?
I thought there were rules against that.
From 4 days ago. They might wanna hurry.
From the above link...
“Due to lack of funds, vandalism to the buoys and technical faults, there have been no operational tsunami warning buoys since 2012.”
The last one in 1883 blew up 2/3rds of the island.
That one went on from May till August before the grand finale.
BTW, the concusion from that one went around the world seven times. It dropped the temps by 2 to 3 degrees worldwide.
Tambora, dropped them by about 5 degrees. Tambora, I believe, was a VEI 7? Gotta check. I dunno what the VEI index was for the “parent” of this one.
Cumbra Vieja in the Canary Islands might cause an issue for some locations on the east coast if it ever slides a big chunk into the ocean. Lots of could(s), would(s), might(s) and may(s) in the piece but algores sea level rise due to possible glow bull discombobulation would pale in comparison. Surfs up dudes.
Is this the volcano that . . .you know, is the “Krakatau East of Java?”
(Nod to a horrible movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4vwtcVriM0)
More to come.
Just like a pimple popping, only bigger. Much bigger.
Well, it is Krakatau, but it is WEST of Java.
I didn’t like the movie, too.
I still blame it on the hooche-cooche dance of KRAKATOA KATIE!
Krakatoa Katy, She ain’t no lady,
when she starts to shake her sarong,
Now Katys out in full array
For Mighty Mouse has saved the day,
for Kathy, Kathy, Krakatoa Katy.
Don’t you just hate when that happens?
There was an earlier version in black and white that was pretty good. Closer to documentary with good acting.
I have a paperback book, NYT Best Seller called Krakatoa that is historical and technical.
Even has mention of Muslims knifing people in the market place.
Your question is moot because climate change caused the eruption. S/
The last one in 1883 blew up 2/3rds of the island.
Yes. If you look at the photos at the top of the thread, those islands around the volcano are actually remnants of the caldera that blew then.
I visited Anak Krakatoa on a sight-seeing ferry boat about 8 years ago. I had just finished reading a book about Krakatoa and the went to Indonesia for business. I was visiting Cilegon, which is very close. I couldn’t pass up the chance to go see where all the action had taken place.
I just dialed in Krakatau on Google Earth and the most current image is from Dec. 2014 and shows a smoke trail drifting off to the south east.
My, my. I thought I was just about the only FReeper who recalled that Mighty Mouse episode.
