A Philadelphia judge has reinstated appeal rights to Mumia Abu-Jamal — convicted of killing a city police officer more than 30 years ago — who has long maintained his innocence as his case gained international attention.
Lawyers for Abu-Jamal praised the decision by Philadelphia Common Pleas Judge Leon Tucker as a major step toward winning the former Black Panther’s freedom.
“This is an unheard of legal victory,” said Rachel Wolkenstein, former lawyer and longtime activist for Abu-Jamal. “This is the best opportunity we have had for Mumia’s freedom in decades.”

Exactly. Even though at the time it was not clearly unwise, and even though a later court held it was not automatically a conflict of interest, it was at the least professional recklessness - not just on his part but of the rest of the bench that allowed him to participate in its decision.

Hell no. If I remember right, 5 people saw him kill the cop including a taxi driver who saw the whole thing from start to finish. He also never denied killing Faulkner. But if you are black and convert to Islam then apparently the left thinks you are innocent.
He wasn't the prosecutor - Rendell was.
He was a judge during one of the later appeals.
His appeals ran out in 1990 but Pennsylvania had a governor (Casey) who would not sign a death warrant and the first death warrant was signed by Tom Ridge in 1995. More appeals and the second death warrant was signed by Tom Ridge in 1999.

That "police officer" had a name: Lt. Daniel Faulkner. Notice that Wesley's name (his fake name anyway -- "Mumia's" real name is Wesley Cook) is mentioned. But in libland, the victim always seems to get lost.
