The ugly specter of religious bigotry reared its disgusting head during Senate confirmation of the nomination of Brian Buescher for a federal judgeship. The Constitution’s Article VI, Clause 3 clearly specifies that “no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States,” but that must be news to Senators Mazie Hirono and Kamala Harris.
Ed Condon of the Catholic News Agency reports:
A judicial nominee faced questions from Senators this month about whether membership in the Knights of Columbus might impede his ability to judge federal cases fairly. The Knights of Columbus say that no candidate for public office should have to defend his membership in a Catholic service organization.
Senators Mazie Hirono (D-HI) and Kamala Harris (D-CA) raised concerns about membership in the Knights of Columbus while Senate Judiciary Committee reviewed the candidacy of Brian C. Buescher, an Omaha-based lawyer nominated by President Trump to sit on the United States District Court for the District of Nebraska.
Senators also asked whether belonging to the Catholic charitable organization could prevent judges from hearing cases “fairly and impartially.”
In written questions sent to Buescher by committee members Dec. 5, Sen. Hirono stated that “the Knights of Columbus has taken a number of extreme positions. For example, it was reportedly one of the top contributors to California’s Proposition 8 campaign to ban same-sex marriage.”
Hirono then asked Buescher if he would quit the group if he was confirmed “to avoid any appearance of bias.”
“The Knights of Columbus does not have the authority to take personal political positions on behalf of all of its approximately two million members,” Buescher responded.
“If confirmed, I will apply all provisions of the Code of Conduct for United States Judges

Where this is going - The left wants to shut down churches that don’t affirm the gay/trans/whatever lifestyle. The left wants to force doctors and nurses to perform abortions against their conscience. The deplorable normal people are to have no freedom of religion or conscience.
If so that should be applied to all the muslims that got elected in the Demoncrat Party! What a bunch of Soulless Scum!
How about a religious test for the Congress members?
How surprising that two Fake American female senators are all for scrapping the Constitution made by White Males.
The proper answer was, “Your question violates the constitution. Next question?”
Democrats believe in the constitution. That was likely what we’re now referring to as a leftist, a collectivist, or a neo-Marxist.
I would say that being a leftist immediately disqualifies anyone from judging anything. Leftists have a hatred within them that spews out from their being. I would say if anything, not belonging to any moral religious organization would DQ a person.
ITA, I am sure this test will not apply to muslims.
Founding fathers opposed such tests and deemed them unconstitutional.
They cant get around it.
...
Not that it would be a good idea, but it would be VERY INSTRUCTIVE if Republicans floated the idea that Democrat-appointed Jews would not be permitted on the courts because of the many places where violence is called out in the Old Testament.
I am a hard core right wing christian. My beliefs are not important if my support of the constitution is first even though the constitution may overrule my religions beliefs.
If one can support the constitution as written his or her religious beliefs are of no consequence.
Our real problem is a judiciary with a political agenda that is non constitutional.
I am so proud of you guys. Not one of you questioned the number of Mormons on the Judiciary Committee.
It's not like spottin' a toupee.
Wow, there are currently four Mormons, but two of them will be gone in January. (Flake and Hatch) As a non-practicing Mormon, I would have concerns about their positions on illegal immigration since the Mormon Church is the second largest in Mexico.
Senator Lazy Kimono.
No Katlicks allowed !
And the ‘RATS call US immoral. Must be Pelosi’s “San Francisco values” again.
Someone needs to explain to those morons, separation of church and state does not mean the State has its boot on the throat of the Church. That they even dare ask such a question is a violation of the constitution. That they demand a person leave a religious organization as a prerequisite for a judicial nomination is a violation of the constitution.
A Guatemalan mother of two dragging her kids thousands of miles and exposing them to untold dangers so they can mooch off US taxpayers is a hero to the RATS, but this Catholic mother of seven is an existential threat to the Constitution. Sick SOBs the lot of them.
