In his first 13 years on the Supreme Court, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr.s main challenge was trying to assemble five votes to move the court to the right though there were only four reliably conservatives justices.
Now he faces a very different problem. With the retirement of Justice Anthony M. Kennedy and his replacement by Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh, the chief justice has the votes he needs on issues like abortion, racial discrimination, religion and voting. At the same time, he has taken Justice Kennedys place as the swing vote at the courts ideological center, making him the most powerful chief justice in 80 years.
But all of that new power comes at a dangerous time for the court, whose legitimacy depends on the public perception that it is not a partisan institution. We dont work as Democrats or Republicans, Chief Justice Roberts said in 2016, and he reiterated that position in an extraordinary rebuke of President Trump last month.
He seemed to underscore that point again on Friday, joining the courts four-member liberal wing, all appointed by Democratic presidents, to reject a request from the Trump administration in a case that could upend decades of asylum policy. Earlier this month, he drew sharp criticism from three conservative colleagues for voting to deny review in two cases on efforts to stop payments to Planned Parenthood.

Were gong to hear a lot of even conservative Justice Roberts from the media in the future, much like conservative John Mccain.
W. screwed us big time on this one. Buttt that’s why we have Trump.
I think the Tea Party is back.
Ha!
The President uttering the words “0bama Judge” really struck a nerve with Roberts and big media.
Did they think no one would notice?
Like McCain, he has developed a taste for the fawning praise of the media when he does their bidding. In the end, it will turn him into what McCain became: a bitter old man who reflexively stabs other people in the back for his own gain. When you need that approval it makes you an extremely insecure individual. It also gives those whose approval you crave absolute power over you.
Ruth Ginsburg practically called Trump a Nazi, and despite 3 cancers and dementia, she will not retire and will be taken out feet first.
No, no - the court (and our permanent government bureaucracy) are not political at all.
We need one more vote. Barrett for RBG would work.
Judges are human too, and lifetime appointments mean they can do whatever they want unchecked by any authority. Also that the courts have aquiured powers the founders never expected them to have.
“The author, Adam Liptak. Lawyer turned journ0list. Looks ten years older than his 58 years too; perhaps even 20 years older than he ought to look.”
Being a RAT will do that to a person. But he has only half of “The RAT Look!”
To complete it, he will need to grow a serious, but ratty, perpetual five o’clock shadow, and get a pair of round wire-rimmed glasses with flat lenses.
Either roberts is dumber than a yew wood stump or the libs have something on him.
“Ruth Ginsburg practically called Trump a Nazi, and despite 3 cancers and dementia, she will not retire and will be taken out feet first.”
Hopefully, she’s getting some well-deserved “help” from Satan!
With this piece from the Slimes, looks like Roberts is a goner in terms of being a constitutionalist conservative. Not surprising, given the horse he rode in on.
The SCOTUS is nothing more than black-robe tyrants....
It is partisan, the 4 libs are at least. We need every GOP appointed Justice to be as well. Partisan is not a dirty word, we’re in a cold civil war and there are 2 sides, and too many on “our side” are willing to play the Vichy role.
The illegals are now Roberts’ Refugees!
As Chief Justice, Roberts must tamp down claims of bias while the grim reaper is scratching for RBG.
He’s not a swing vote. If he is it’s in name only. He’s a liberal vote on anything that makes a real difference but then a conservative vote on the frivilous non everyday concerns. He us a piece if crap.
Roberts is not conservative not is he the leader of anything conservative. I would say it is about time that we call him the leader of the liberals.
I guess the NY Times forgot about the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco and the damage they have done along with the damage they wanted to do that got overturned at the first opportunity by a higher court. I guess it was just a little oversight.

The dems only appoint hyper-liberal judges that legislate from the bench. Pretty much blows the non-partisan theory out of the water.
You mean Chief Justice John Souter-Roberts?
