Schumer says funding for border wall will never pass, 'not today, not next week, not next year'

Calling the partial government shutdown the result of a "two-week tantrum" by President Trump, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the funds for the border wall the president wants will never pass the Senate.

"If you want to open the government, you must abandon the wall, plain and simple," the New York Democrat said in his remarks on the Senate floor. The Senate opened at noon Saturday for a rare session, just days before Christmas.

His Saturday comments echoed those he made Friday to Vice President Mike Pence, one of the administration's negotiators.

Trump and Senate leaders failed to come to an agreement this week that would garner the necessary 60 votes in the Republican-controlled Senate. Negotiations have stalled over $5.8 billion in funding for a border wall, which passed in the House's version of the spending bill Thursday.

"Everyone knew yesterday, long before the House vote, that the president's wall lacked 60 votes in the Senate. It has proven to lack even 50 votes. It will never pass the Senate. Not today, not next week, not next year," Schumer said.

Calling the wall expensive and ineffective, Schumer said the majority of Americans do not support its construction.

Somebody should shut this Synagouge of Satan bastard up. We should bombard his office phone, and make life miserable for his staff.

Which country is that? The one that just elected an open borders Congress?

You mean the one where most of the Democrats lied about there support for open borders?

“The one that just elected an open borders Congress?”

I’m sure if the idiots that put demoncrats back in control of congress were polled on the reason, it wouldn’t be because of the border. It would be because the fakestream media told them that the orange man is bad and they should vote rat (dumb twits...dumb suburban twits)

Chuck Schumer tried for treason. That would make for a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Yes, and 90% of them are in DC, MD, and VA: all solid DEM strongholds.

How long can the average fed worker hold out without a paycheck?

From what I could find, the gov't shut down between December 16, 1995 and January 6, 1996. An earlier start than this time. I know they all eventually get paid, but how long can they hold out?

It would be deliciously ironic if Chuck were to reach a tragic end as a result of an unfortunate confrontation with an “undocumented immigrant “.

Agreed. I’d also start using military money during the shutdown for it as well.

I was in the Army during that shutdown. We just got paid late. Since most of the businesses in the area were reliant on the Post for their livelihood, they understood. It wasn’t a huge deal.

He chooses open borders. He chooses to allow America to be over-run by invaders. He is unfit for leadership. Purge.

Chuckles I’m surprised you used the word ‘never.’

Surely a wise, seasoned politician like you should know you never use the word never.

You know after a while people will discover that they can live without government

Agreed. As a tax payer I would like to know why we are footing the bill for non-essential employees. Business actually runs better without non-essential employees in the way.

This has become a line in the sand

I'm okay with that. We stand on our side and they stand on their side. When the bell rings, we fight. Winner takes all.

We either have a wall or we have no country. Your choice Chuck, but actually, I kinda like the idea of you..... not being in my country anymore. Maybe we wont give you that choice after all.

Federal employees in some states (or the city of Washington) make more, sometimes much more, than federal employees in other states. Topping the list is Washington, DC with an average federal worker salary of $112,601, not including benefits.

Wondering if those $112K fed workers are more frugal than people are in flyover country, or if they have huge mortgages, outstanding credit card balances and BMW lease payments. I'd speculate that (civilian) gov't workers would feel more secure in their jobs than the rest of us. And therefore be more inclined to take on more debt. But I don't know. I'm just speculating.

Of course border wall funding won’t pass. Neither party wants it.

Fine. Keep the damn government shut down. And, as other continuing resolutions/funding bills expire, bring down other non-essential departments of government as well.

Think of how much money can be saved over the next two years. There is more than one way to downsize bloated government bureaucracies enroute to a secure border.

Win/win.

If they’re “non-essential,” why do we need them at all?
