Schumer says funding for border wall will never pass, 'not today, not next week, not next year'

Calling the partial government shutdown the result of a "two-week tantrum" by President Trump, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the funds for the border wall the president wants will never pass the Senate.

"If you want to open the government, you must abandon the wall, plain and simple," the New York Democrat said in his remarks on the Senate floor. The Senate opened at noon Saturday for a rare session, just days before Christmas.

His Saturday comments echoed those he made Friday to Vice President Mike Pence, one of the administration's negotiators.

Trump and Senate leaders failed to come to an agreement this week that would garner the necessary 60 votes in the Republican-controlled Senate. Negotiations have stalled over $5.8 billion in funding for a border wall, which passed in the House's version of the spending bill Thursday.

"Everyone knew yesterday, long before the House vote, that the president's wall lacked 60 votes in the Senate. It has proven to lack even 50 votes. It will never pass the Senate. Not today, not next week, not next year," Schumer said.

Calling the wall expensive and ineffective, Schumer said the majority of Americans do not support its construction.

All Trump has to do is state four facts.

It is NOT about the money: The $5 billion request is 0.0005 of the Federal budget.

$5 billion is about as much as the annual FEDERAL SUGAR SUBSIDIES!

Americans have a righ to self preservation and democrats are preventing Americans from national security and self preservation.

Although President Trump already holds the clear advantage, I wouldn’t mind seeing an address about the issue.

If Chuck Schumer waits until the new Congress is seated if I was Pres Trump I’d say I won’t sign any bills unless its funding for the wall.

Does he have the 67 votes he needs to override Trumps veto? Because if not then the government will remained closed until he gives in. I think all those Dem swamp creatures who are on the government payroll will make him break before Trumps base breaks.

I'm not ready to yet assume that the GOP will stick together on this. Their hearts aren't in it, Trump is dragging them into this fight. Eventually they will say 'why not just join the democrats and override his veto?'. They're probably already asking themselves this. They will convince themselves that the press will make them radioactive if they don't side with the dems and the press will protect them as heroes if they do (which they won't).

I think it more likely the GOP turns on Trump than the dems give him even a single vote. He's going to lose this. But he'll keep his supporters, which he wasn't going to if he avoided this fight. And the GOP will indeed be radioactive after they capitulate. Who knows, maybe we'll get a new party out of this, one that actually means what they say.

“If you want to open the government, you must abandon the wall, plain and simple,” - Chuck Schumer December 22nd, 2018.

I say we let the politics of this stew with the Democrat Caucus and the American people and ask the question again on February 22nd, 2019.

Democrats will offer $10 billion to make the whole thing go away.

Because THEY ARE BLUFFING.

Do the Democrats have enough seats in the House in the next Congress to override a veto? I don’t think so.

If he doesn’t win this battle he loses the White House.

It’s the hill to die on.

"Is this the kind of thing Chuck Schumer wants to be remembered in history for?"

This was Chuck's twitter banner for the last year and a half. He's a domestic enemy like most demoncrats

Oh, and by the way: Gov workers PRAY for shutdowns. They know there is absolutely no chance whatsoever that that will not get paid. ZERO CHANCE. Free, paid vacation is always a fab thing. They will not put any pressure on anybody at anytime to end the rape of the public funds that a shutdown represents.

I think he will lose this because the dems are 100% against it and the GOP is too, truth be told. They will override his veto. But the only way it harms Trump is if he caves, not if he loses. If he caves (as it seemed he was going to) then he is toast. With nobody left to support him the dems will end up putting him in jail on some fake charge. But only if he caves. If the GOP abandons him and overrides his veto then he’ll keep his supporters and probably win in 2020 and the quislings will be the ones who pay the price, not Trump.

What the Chuckster apparently doesn’t realize is the President’s constituents don’t give a rat’s @$$ how long this shut-down-that-isn’t -really-a-shutdown takes.

He and Nancy are going to be squealing like pigs long before this President even breaks a sweat.

All Trump has to do is tell Senator Schmucky that his third world cesspool New York City won’t get one cent of federal money if there’s no wall funding. All New York City spending will be vetoed, then Schmucky can duke it out with Congressional Republicans to override his veto.
