Scientists can now quickly determine a chick’s gender before it hatches, potentially ending the need to cull billions of male chicks worldwide.
The world’s first ever no-kill eggs are now on sale in Berlin after German scientists found an easy way to determine a chick’s gender before it hatches, in a breakthrough that could put an end to the annual live shredding of billions of male chicks worldwide.
The patented “Seleggt” process can determine the sex of a chick just nine days after an egg has been fertilised. Male eggs are processed into animal feed, leaving only female chicks to hatch at the end of a 21-day incubation period. “If you can determine the sex of a hatching egg you can entirely dispense with the culling of live male chicks,” said Seleggt managing director Dr Ludger Breloh, who spearheaded the four-year programme by German supermarket Rewe Group to make its own-brand eggs more sustainable. “It’s not about winning or losing,” he added of the worldwide race to find a marketable solution. “We all have the same goal, which is to end the culling of chicks in the supply chain.
Of course, there’s competition, but it’s positive in that it keeps us all focused on that goal.” An estimated 4-6 billion male chicks are slaughtered globally every year because they serve no economic purpose. Some are suffocated, others are fed alive into grinding or shredding machines to be processed into reptile food. The culling is a messy solution to a thorny problem of modern poultry farming. Humans have bred chickens for one of two purposes: to produce eggs, or meat. Yet half of all the animals bred for this purpose are considered useless.

Question for the biologists. How can the Y chromosone be eradicated from the male spermatazoa? AND how can the x chromosone in the hen be activated to produce a hen?
Exactly the opposite of the way some cultures deal with the gender of babies, i.e., girls have no value.
And I would say that biology suggests that when you have an organism with the dna of the animal it will become, it is in fact that animal.

I can’t believe the propaganda in this article. They make it seem like this development is some sort of moral victory, when it’s just a way to shorten incubation times and costs and get rid of chicken-sexer jobs. The end results are the same, just at lower costs.
“Egg not alive, chick alive” is just the sort of thing abortionists say about people, and that’s what’s important in this article.
Why do I get the feeling this is the "solution" the feminists would prefer for the male human problem nowadays?

Science says that a unique life begins at fertilization of the egg. Intervention at any point after that is still murder, no matter how technology makes the perpetrator feel about it.
chinas policy of no female babies is diluting the race. Men go to other countries to find a bride thereby injecting the other countries DNA into the pool. Chinese as a race will soon be non existent.
India turns out a lot of lower grade rooster capes for fly tying. But people in India are probably hungrier than most in the world.

It might be their crowing. In the city where I live you can raise chickens, but you can't keep a rooster - because of the crowing.

I had no idea that maceration was a method used for culling chicks until I read this article. Of course I had to do a web search on the process, because it sounds frightfully inhumane. What I saw convinced me that the process is actually humane, although I must say, it's the sort of thing that can really prey upon the emotions of the gullible.
US Congress does that all the time.
