President Donald Trumps announcement on Thursday that James Mattis would be stepping down as secretary of defense in February was a shock to many conservatives ― and not in a good way. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said in a statement that he was distressed that [Mattis] is resigning due to sharp differences with the president on ... key aspects of Americas global leadership.

“While I am a bit sad that Gen. Mattis is leaving, there are more out there and honestly, he made a better General than SecDef.”
Mad Dog was a good combat general. As a political thinker, not so much.
Although I find the Mattis resignation disconcerting i realize that one step at a time, Trump is doing as he promised.
Rather than withdrawinf drom Syria, I would prefer withdrawing from Germany and maybe Italy and perhaps japan. He should save $1o billion and direct it towards the wall.
Total withdrawal mibht not be practical, but serious reduction is
Its not time to panic. Its a wake up call to President Donald J. Trump. When he finds no qualified person will want to take the Sec Def job because they dont support these troop pullouts, hell come around.
The two names that have been floated out there already (General Keane and Senator Tom Cotton) have called this a mistake. They wont take the job. So, are Freepers out there going to call Tom Cotton a neo-con new world order globalist interventionist socialist? Really?
Tom Cotton sits on the Senate intel committee that is currently openly colluding with the Mueller Coup. He’s a careerist not worth a bucket of spit, apparently.
All these generals were just fine taking orders from the community organizer from Chicago while Obama’s ROE were sending our boys and girls home in body bags by the hundreds. Not a one resigned in protest and undermined him on their way out the door. Why is that?
I used a copy of the Dark Winter exercise extensively in my work in 2002-2003 when I was involved in a plan to vaccinate the US population against smallpox in 30 days.
I never learned why this plan was ordered up by the White House - I was dying to know if they had evidence of existing stocks of virus other than the known ones in Atlanta and Koltsovo.
Anyway, I never found out, but the planning was a fascinating window into the mind of a certain type of leader who would include “make sure people keep shopping” in a semi-doomsday scenario.
I didn’t know until this morning that it was a book. If you don’t know about the exercise (which was ordered and run BEFORE 9/11), you should grab the book. The simulation was very detailed, and I believe the lowest number of deaths in any iteration of the scenario was 30 million.
Because they won’t take a job you jump to someone defining who they are? sorta silly!
We searched around all morning and didn’t find one conservative who’s panicking about Mattis. Soldiers who don’t or won’t follow the CIC’s directives get gone all the time. I wonder if those pussyheads at HuffPo remember General MacArthur? The media had the same sentiment back then about that arrogant SOB.
Wow, I thought at least Tom Cotton could escape the wrath of freepers. Is everyone who ever disagrees with President Trump the enemy? Heaven help us....
A bit of the Peter Principle in action, eh?
That’s true. His resignation letter says it just right, he as the sense and dignity to leave, knowing he does not share Trump’s vision. That’s something a leader would do, but which a political hack would never even think of doing.
Many Marines consider Mattis to be almost the second coming of Chesty Puller. Someone in the swamp got to him.
Did these people panic when Obama was purging the Military of pro American brass?
Kind of. He could have been a stellar SecDef and we military types had high hopes/expectations of that coming to fruition. Unfortunately, he succumbed to the political side of the job. Though he never forgot the troops, he seems to have filtered his response through a PC screen.
There can be only one CIC!
Agreed. Many Marines I know still have the Saint Mattis image on their bulkheads.
I think there is no reason to allow the deaths of more of our warriors. We have left arm, legs, and shattered lives all over the Middle East.
The congress made it impossible for the US Saudie relationship and the possibilities of the Sunnies stepping in. They got what they wanted. First the Turks could not be wrong they are NATO allies and now suddenly the Turks are wrong.
I was never convinced we were on the right side in Syria. The Syrian Kurds need to relocate to Kurdish region of Iraq until the civil war is over
I’m not panicking about anything.
At the time that General Mattis was named to be SecDef, I thought that was one of the wisest and best moves that President Trump could possibly make. Nothing has changed my opinion on that. The fact that Mattis is stepping aside at this time is fine with me. He has served our country with honor, guts and integrity. I just hope and pray that his successor has the same level of honor, guts and integrity.
Semper Fi, General Mattis!
