New York is facing an educational disaster. Mayor Bill De Blasio's socialist plan to end meritocratic entry to New York's famed specialty schools - in performing arts, hard sciences, engineering, academic achievement - in the name of racial equality, is about to trigger a huge white flight. And not just white flight, Asian flight. Here's an excellent report from New York Post columnist Karol Markowitz:
In a push to improve diversity at District 15 middle schools in Brooklyn, Mayor de Blasio last week approved a plan to remove admission standards at all of them.
and
The announcement of the changes featured some blatant doublespeak. “The District 15 middle-school diversity plan will remove screens from all middle schools and will prioritize 52 percent of sixth-grade seats for students from low-income families, English-language learners and students in temporary housing.” Got that? They will remove screens and replace them with other screens.
The removal of standards won’t just be academic. Schools that previously focused on music or the arts will no longer be able to audition students. Students who have dedicated their lives to learning to play the cello will be in classes alongside kids who have no interest in the arts at all.
Does that sound revolting or what?
Imagine being an Asian student or a parent out in some place like Queens and working hard as heck to get into one of these good schools as the kid's ticket out of Archie Bunker land and being told the kid is not good enough, solely owing to his inability to 'contribute' to the racial balance. For him, it's back to the crappy public schools with the mold and the tumbledown bricks,

That about sums up the masses of the American people.
This is a funny convergence on my radar: Just yesterday, I read the latest N. Arizona U. alumni magazine and there was this slick cover and large article about a ‘96 grad, Carranza, as the Chancellor of NYC school system.
So, I spun off the article we all saw here on FReep and found Carranza, from NAU, one of several schools of which I also am an alum, saying: “Why are we screening children? I don’t get it.” Thereby admitting that he will supervise the demise of any remaining excellence in those schools.
Heck, he might even play mariachi music while it burns.
New Yorkers enjoy their metropolitan gulag.
New York will become Baltimore.......... soon
I aspire
to something higher.
Ha! Weve removed it -
See the smoke from the pyre?
Now come and join us
in the muck and the mire.
The attempt to destroy our entire culture continues.
When will they outlaw breathing?
There’s a name for it.
Google “magic dirt” theory.
There are ppl out there who believe if you just swap out middle class kids in intact families (and their values), with poor kids with broken, single parent families (and their values), that everything will be just dandy.
For the record, they ruined the all midwestern big cities with this nonsense. It caused, did not end, discrimination.
When the jungl bunnie were bussed into my Jr High in 1973 all freaking hell burst loose. We call the little cultural spats Riots, and one day all the non colored students left and went home based on the rumors of a impending riot.
These artzy schoolz will never be the same.
I guess they get what they deserve.
He learned nothing from the white flight in Dallas, TX back in the ‘70s. I drove through my old neighborhood with the doors locked in the middle of the day and did not stop. One fast run past my old house and schools and was outta there.
Let me guess - despite the closures taxes have continued to rise.
Japan also has no requirement to attend high school, has plenty of trade schools and apprenticeships, and is an intensive meritocracy based on test scores.
Plus since they rooted out a lot of those who didn’t want to go to HS anyway those scores aren’t included in the “national average” that the US is always compared to.
Of course there is still a way to “buy” your way into a lot of the more select schools.
There was an article a week or two ago about the Chicago system losing students.
The school committee redefined the funding needs, so the budget is not changing.
That is to say, no "fewer students educational dividend" going back to the taxpayers.
When this happened to Washington, DC in the 50s, white flight was a torrent to the suburbs, and long-established working class neighborhoods (for people other than high-turnover politicians) collapsed. Beautiful churches emptied out and now sit in ruins. Recovery is still slow, after almost 70 years. DC has been “gentrifying” for the past 15 years, but there are still pockets of severe underprivilege among adults of color and underperformance in those neighborhoods’ schools.
Excellent news. Why were taxpayers ever dunned in the first place to teach cello? Do brilliant Asians need taxpayer funded socialist propaganda camps to learn math and science.
This village needed burning. Perhaps a free market oriented solution will fill the void.
That’s easy. Tell them your child is an Muslim African American trans.
What brilliant turn of phrase, gaijin! I truly laughed out loud!
