The federal government has discovered a massive new reserve of oil and natural gas in Texas and New Mexico that it says has the largest continuous oil and gas resource potential ever assessed.
Christmas came a few weeks early this year, Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke said of the new reserve, which is believed to have enough energy to fuel the U.S. for nearly seven years.
In all, the new reserve is said to contain 281 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, 46.3 billion barrels of oil, and 20 billion barrels of natural-gas liquids, the Interior Departments U.S. Geological Survey said.
Almost a third of the U.S.s total crude-oil production comes from the Permian Basin where the reserve was found, making it the biggest shale-oil-producing region in the U.S.

Opposite corner of the state.
Because Malthusian’s are always wrong.
The welfare state of New Mexico is salivating.
What I always want with reports like this are comparisons to what Saudi Arabia, Iran/Iraq, and Venezuela have.
Thats what would really excite me; replacing their oil with ours, for the next 200 years. It seems those countries never run out!
How much do they have? How do discoveries like this and others compare to their reserves? Thats information Id like to know (if anyone wants to chime in).
Actually, you are on to something. An older theory that has been receiving more attention lately is that "fossil" fuels are not really from fossil remains at all, but have formed from deep-seated biosphere emissions of methane gasses.
I woulda raised me brows at that, but a couple of decades ago miners in the Carlin, Nevada gold deposits were finding vertical vein-like structures composed of hydrocarbons...which cause YUGE problems in cyanide heap leach circuits. These vertical structures cut across sedimentary beds and were, (are?) thought to be deep-seated faults filled with methane, and other hydrocarbon gasses. Check out Thomas Gold, The Deep Hot Biosphere.

Oct article of this survey.
“We emphasize technically recoverable, she said. We look at the resources extracted today. We dont do economically recoverable resource estimates; this is not an in-place resource estimate, its not a reserves estimate.”
Now let’s exploit it.
281 trillion cubic feet of natural gas = 7,957,033,892,352 cubic meters - that’s 7.9 trillion cubic meters
Looks like the US just became the worlds largest natural gas super power by so much that all the others look impoverished ... If my math is correct.
Here’s a partial list of the natural gas super powers as of 2016 in proven reserves (in million cubic meters; 1,000,000 cubic feet = 28,316.85 cubic meters. One trillion=1,000,000,000,000)

Oil is a renewable resource made from vegetative matter...
... the same way it is made in a laboratory.
Just because I’m slow, I’ll restate your point and you can correct me if I’m wrong.
We just became the world leader by two orders of magnitude, correct? 10^6 to 10^12, right?
Not many trees to hug in west Texas/
eastern New Mexico, cactus, mesquite,
and rocks....;)
Somewhere in the cosmos there’s a karmic traitor’s noose waiting for that pos.
How long before a federal judge blocks it?
yeah - I read that for the largest of the Saudi oil fields to be created, it would have took about the number of dinosaurs dying that would fill up a cube 19 miles long per side!
It sounds preposterous when you actually think about it, it aint no ‘fossil’ fuel, that’s for sure.
"Just more proof we've been guilt-hoaxed by the idea that oil comes from nonrenewable fossils. Oil is a renewable resource made from vegetative matter...
... the same way it is made in a laboratory.
I’ll take your word for it ... orders of magnitude ... and to think just a few decades ago they claimed oil and gas were almost gone ...
