Elizabeth Warren Stands by DNA Test. But Around Her, Worries Abound.
New York Times ^ | December 6, 2018 | Astead W. Herndon

WASHINGTON — The plan was straightforward: After years of being challenged by President Trump and others about a decades-old claim of Native American ancestry, Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts would take a DNA test to prove her stated family origins in the Cherokee and Delaware tribes.

But nearly two months after Ms. Warren released the test results and drew hostile reactions from prominent tribal leaders, the lingering cloud over her likely presidential campaign has only darkened. Conservatives have continued to ridicule her. More worrisome to supporters of Ms. Warren’s presidential ambitions, she has yet to allay criticism from grass-roots progressive groups, liberal political operatives and other potential 2020 allies who complain that she put too much emphasis on the controversial field of racial science — and, in doing so, played into Mr. Trump’s hands.

Advisers close to Ms. Warren say she has privately expressed concern that she may have damaged her relationships to Native American groups and her own standing with progressive activists, particularly those who are racial minorities. Several outside advisers are even more worried: They say they believe a plan should be made to repair that damage, possibly including a strong statement of apology.

The advisers say Ms. Warren will have to confront the issue again if she announces a presidential campaign, which is expected in the coming weeks, and several would like her to act soon.

Publicly, at this point, the senator isn’t second-guessing her actions.

“There have been a lot of thoughtful conversations about this, and I appreciate that,” Ms. Warren said in an interview. “I believe for everyone in public life that transparency is crucial.”

Asked if the criticism of the test has inspired any regret, Ms. Warren said: “I put it out there. It’s on the internet for anybody to see."

In other words, believe in 'make believe' over actual fact.

How would the media react if Trump had claimed "Native American" status to get discounts on building permits?

Wait, no. I don't have to guess.....

I think your wife is eligible for some free money from the government. You should look into it. They have money for reparations or something, for Native American descendants.

I used to work with a gal whose husband was 1/4 Native American, and he and their kids got monthly payments.

Conservatives have continued to ridicule her................ Yes, but not in the Alinsky manner. Here there is a reason, mainly because of the 1/1200% allegation that makes 100%. According to Cherokee nation research, maybe she should be called Princess Crazy B!tc#.

Liz didn't even fare well in a local poll of potential Democrat nominees for 2020.

Presidential hopefuls appear woeful in poll

"In the poll from the University of Massachusetts and YouGov., U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, widely seen as a probable candidate and favorite of the party’s progressive wing, drew 11 percent of self-described Democrats and independents, putting her third on a list of 10 would-be candidates. Gov. Charlie Baker, on the other hand, outperformed the competition on the right, save President Trump.

“Incredibly weak numbers for Elizabeth Warren,” tweeted CNN elections analyst Harry Enten of the poll.

The very early 2020 poll — which didn’t include many lesser-known Democrats who either have announced or strongly suggested runs — had former Vice President Joe Biden leading with 19 percent, and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders in second with 14 percent. Texas U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke, who this year lost a high-profile Senate race, drew 10 percent. Among the 10 were former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, who got 6 percent, and Salem-area U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton, who brought up the rear with 1 percent."
