Russia has completed an elaborate air defense system in Syria that curbs the operational capabilities of both the United States and Israel, according to a report by the Washington- based Institute for the Study of War. The deployments throughout the conflict-ravaged country include variations of the advanced S-300 and S-400 systems in addition to other cutting-edge technologies.
Moscow long ago exported such systems to Syria, however, they remained under the control of its own army. Only after the accidental downing in September by Syrian forces of a Russian reconnaissance plane, an incident the Kremlin blamed on Jerusalem which minutes earlier had approved a strike on a nearby Iranian weapons depot, did President Vladimir Putin green-light the transfer of the S-300 to the Assad regime.
This has, in the view of many observers, raised the probability of clashes not only since Syrian forces are now better equipped to counter Israeli and American military activities, but also because of the greater potential for unwanted incidents caused by human error or, equally plausible, sheer incompetence.

Putin understands this reality. (And he doesnt want Iran in Syria either - too dangerous to Russian interests and too risky, destabilizing).
Works for me.
More targets.
Is Russia ready to have its new S-400s blown to dust while still on the ground?
Netanyahu is under political pressure within Israel. His long tenure may be ending. However he will not leave office with
Iran remaining an existential threat to the Jewish people and Israel. If he did , he would consider his career a failure and would not have a day of personal peace for the remainder of his life.
This article is dumb, Israel has been conducting a lot of operations in Syria over the last year or so, with Russia’s apparent cooperation. Why do they act as if it’s a new thing??
Excellent point...interesting times.
If Israel is forced to confront Iran in Syria over Russian objection, then the Russians are going to lose a LOT of money in sales, because the Israelis are going to pick apart the entirety of their air defense system - radars, communications and missiles - rendering them as useless against the IAF’s aircraft as sling shots.
I think that the Russians know this, and that this is why the 2 countries have been staying out of each others’ way for a while in Syria. Russia may be stronger (esp. when counting its nukes), but not right next door to Israel.
Thanks Ancesthntr, nice analysis. And as allendale said, Bibi won't leave office until the Iranian threat is extinguished, even if that means beheading the mullahcracy in its "homeland" (it's a foreign occupier of Iran anyway). Putin set up a triumvirat with Turkey and Iran (and ignoring the wishes of the failed puppet Assad regime) in order to counterbalance Iran and Iranian influence over Syria. But he's stuck in Syria, like a mouse in a sticky trap, and short of an ignominious unconditional retreat, there is no end game. Still was brilliant to align with an old traditional rival/foe, Turkey, but Syria will be Putin's funeral.

Goodness, Israel has never "defied" Russia before.
