‘Robin Hood': The Biggest Blockbuster Bomb of 2018

Lionsgate’s take on Sherwood Forest suffers worst opening of any film this year with a budget above $90 million

Lionsgate’s “Robin Hood” is turning out to be this year’s biggest blockbuster bomb, with a $14 million five-day opening against a budget of just under $100 million. This year’s Thanksgiving weekend has provided the most lucrative box office ever. But even with all the record-breaking success, there have been some failures in 2018.

Most of those bombs, like Paramount’s “Annihilation” and Fox’s “The Darkest Minds,” have had low-to-mid-level budgets that have reduced how much of a financial hit their studios have taken.

Mel Brooks’ “Robin Hood: Men in Tights” was a good one, especially the catapult and circumcision scenes. The only better catapult one was when I told a friend at work about a news story that contained the terms, “girl friend” and “trebuchet.” He said he didn’t want to hear anything more.

It was extraordinary how clean everyone was in that movie and their perfect hairdos.

As a devoted Rickmaniac, I went to the church in London where the church scenes from Prince of Thieves were filmed, St Bartholomew the Great. I recommend it to anyone interested in the film or other British films made there - or anyone who wants to experience a thousand-plus years of history all around you,

The trailer for it looked like a confused mess. A guy in a leather ninja suit jumping through fire while shooting arrows at guys wearing steel masks, looked like some sort of "Game of Thrones" fantasy world. Throw in an exotic looking woman and a black guru and you think "another bad adaptation of a video game". Then it says "Robin Hood" and you think "oh no. They really messed that up, didn't they".

No interest in seeing it. Ever.

Why is Robin Hood returning at this particular time?

Robin Hood is the thief in the night, returning to take back and then restore that which was lost and destroyed (stolen by the Establishment, the wolves in sheep’s clothing). Everyone knows the basic storyline, even by way of Disney.

Everything is going to back to its rightful owners. Nobody wants that message in this day and age.

Nobody wants to see Robin Hood, because there goes everything they “own”, even their undies.

I guess Hollywood is just THAT compelled to make films about wealth redistribution.

And I just found out that Spock guy was the dour teacher on Harry Potter!

And here I always thought the dour teacher guy was actually the terrorist villain from the original "Die Hard" movie.

I plan to start my manga and anime ping list soon. But for this manga, warning because it’s damn depressing for the first chapters but there’s always light at the end of the tunnel ;)

“That wold have some viewer interest especially if it becomes clear Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham are just two sides of the same coin.”

Speak for yourself. I’m 60 and I still believe in heroes who manage to do things just because they are right. And the 1100s may not have been as thuggish as you portray it. There were educated & even Christian folk back then.

Your retelling sounds more like Washington DC than the England of the 1100s.
