‘Robin Hood': The Biggest Blockbuster Bomb of 2018

Lionsgate’s take on Sherwood Forest suffers worst opening of any film this year with a budget above $90 million

Lionsgate’s “Robin Hood” is turning out to be this year’s biggest blockbuster bomb, with a $14 million five-day opening against a budget of just under $100 million. This year’s Thanksgiving weekend has provided the most lucrative box office ever. But even with all the record-breaking success, there have been some failures in 2018.

Most of those bombs, like Paramount’s “Annihilation” and Fox’s “The Darkest Minds,” have had low-to-mid-level budgets that have reduced how much of a financial hit their studios have taken.

Was there really a new story to tell about Robin Hood?

There are few new stories, haven't been for a couple millennia.

Wish he’d been able to do William Tell.

Did we really need another Robin Hood movie?

Who was the genius who thought the world needed another Robin Hood remake? That was a stupid venture.

Wish he’d been able to do William Tell.

But behind the chalet
My holiday's complete
And I feel like William Tell
Maid Marian on her tiptoed feet
Pulling mussels from a shell
Pulling mussels from a shell

The Russell Crowe version was not the traditional Robin Hood story. It was RHino, Robin Hood in Name Only. Not a re-imagining, but a completely different story with ridiculous Norman landing craft complete with Higgins boat ramps crossing the English Channel!

I liked 1993 “ Robin Hood Me in Tights” by Mel Brooks

Before that Mel Brooks had a show "When Things Were Rotten" which was also a spoof of Robin Hood.

LOL on the Crowe version. I recall it made it to Netflix but I didn’t last more than 15 minutes so I didn’t see the silly stuff you referred to. Glad I bailed on it so fast. I saw the Costner version and it was OK - pretty much what you would expect. Actually, I still like the old Errol Flynn version best.

Was there really a new story to tell about Robin Hood?

Make it as real as possible in depicting the 12th century. Brutal knights and thuggish lords shaking coins out of swinish peasants and canny merchants. Everybody in it for their own interest while having some cleric or clerk utter hypocritical bromides on the social order. Robin Hood a near thug who came up second best in a fight with a bigger liege lord. His merry men pretty much ronin like broken knights and unemployed mercenaries gathering a growing band of the dispossessed and the criminal from the lowest social strata. Conduct a guerrilla war against the much better armed and equipped government forces who are competent but brutal professionals. That wold have some viewer interest especially if it becomes clear Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham are just two sides of the same coin.

Lots of good versions of that story already out. How many times are they going to tell it?

I knew a crew member here who worked with Rickman on the movie BOTTLE SHOCK and he was the nicest Brit on the set. He just loved the Napa Valley and bought the entire crew a bottle of wine each after the movie wrapped. Not even the lead actors did that..

Little Leo DiPrickio was a producer, Jammies Foxx was in it as an A-rab and Bono's daughter was Made Marian.

Flush the toilet on this turkey.

In this telling, Little John is Robin Hood’s black muslim commander and mentor.

One supposes muslim Little John is teaching mass murder and rape, as is the craving of the Muslim.

Well now, everyone knows male hero types are embarrassments from the past. We have to let the past die, right? Kill it if we have to!
Robin can be a male OR female name, so Robin Hood should...MUST...be female! Merry men? BAH! MARY men is correct. Granted, 'stealing from the rich to give to the poor' could be reworked to glorify socialism, but to be true to that mentality viewing should be free for all. Who needs box office returns?Capitalism is evil...right?/sarc

Did any of this thinking contribute to the film bombing?
