40-year mystery about rising temps on moon solved — and it was probably the Apollo astronauts' fault
Business Insider ^ | June 12, 2018 | Hilary Brueck

An explorer's adage says to "take only photos, leave only footprints."

But it seems the footprints of NASA's Apollo astronauts had unintended consequences for the surface of the moon after they landed there nearly 50 years ago.

Newly discovered temperature data from the 1970s moon landings, released in the Journal of Geophysical Research in April, reveals that NASA astronauts probably warmed up the moon's surface temperature by as much as 6 degrees Fahrenheit by walking around and poking into the lunar surface.

The data comes from so-called heat-flow experiments that were installed on the moon in 1971 and 1972 during the Apollo 15 and Apollo 17 missions. For the experiments, astronauts on each mission drilled two holes into the surface of the moon at depths ranging from 3.2 feet to 7.5 feet deep. The astronauts inserted fiberglass tubes into the holes and plopped platinum thermometers inside to read the temperatures at varying depths below the moon's surface. Those probes beamed the temperature data to Earth in near real time.

I can understand how the readings from the temperature probes they installed could be affected by some local conditions related to their installation, but this article makes it sound as though a few astronauts altered the temperature of the moon. This obviously fits with anthropomorphic climate change, and fits the current narrative, somewhat conveniently. Thoughts? (I truncated the title slightly to conform with FR requirements)

Maybe the sun had a lot of spots those years? Two astronauts sure didn’t do it.

In space, a giant heat dissipator, some dude walking about and taking pictures changes the temp 6 degrees?

Nuts.

Thoughts? Tell the Russians. They can incorporate this into their investigation of whether the moon landing was real or fake.

no no no- they installed and operated a dirty coal fired plant there to process their film while they conducted their photography assignment- everyone knows that-

Good grief the stupid idiots...

So the probes communicate back with earth right? With WHAT? Radio transmitters and a WIRE - probably made of copper that, even if insulated, absorbed heat and radiation from the sun that’s unshielded by atmosphere - the mid energy would get transmitted to the probes casing and heating it up.

Duh.

It’s not land temperature increasing its thermometer temp increasing - same as the thermometers here on earth that were next to asphalt roads giving biased results.

Agreed. Maybe it is coincidental. Or maybe those areas had something interesting to the NASA that, oh by the way, have higher temperatures.

Surely, the scientists wouldn’t be that stupid. And don’t call me shirley.

A line of emoticons is for those incapable of expressing themselves through words. Sloth and laziness writ large.

Unless the font size is increased to ludicrous levels, these same emoticons are nothing but a tiny smear of varied color on the screen.

Please use words so others might understand what you are trying to communicate.

The article could have been written much more clearly for a geral audience understanding. What they’re saying is that the temperature sensors are possibly not recording what they expected to record. Probably because the surface near the sensors was disturbed and changed the thermal properties of the ground near the sensors, but the old data is degraded and more study is needed to figure it out.

Devising a good experiment can be hard. When the first lunar mission landed, they weren’t 100% sure the whole lander wouldn’t just sink into the soil and suffocate the astronauts. Learning how the lunar surface composition traps or releases solar radiation would be a huge part of any future lunar mission.

What do you think the odds are that the Russians will come to the conclusion that the moon landing by the United States was real?

I would say near zero otherwise they wouldn’t be sent out on this mission.
