Gowdy suggests videotaping private interview with Comey to address concerns about leaks

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) on Sunday suggested recording a private interview with James Comey after the former FBI director said he would comply with a House Judiciary Committee subpoena only if it meant holding a public hearing.

Gowdy, who has presided over several congressional hearings as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said on CBS's "Face the Nation," that he agreed with Comey's point that private hearings are susceptible to selective leaks.

"The remedy for leaks is not to have a public hearing where you are supposed to ask about 17 months worth of work in five minutes. I think the remedy is to videotape the deposition, videotape the transcribed interview," he said.

Gowdy suggested the interview could be scrubbed for classified information, then released to the public.

"I am sensitive to leaks," Gowdy added. "I think they undercut the authenticity of the investigation. The remedy is not to have a professional wrestling-type, carnival atmosphere, which is what congressional public hearings have become."

He noted that a public hearing with Comey could be particularly contentious, as members of both parties have been critical of the former FBI director's conduct.

Gowdy said the decision on how to handle Comey's testimony will ultimately fall to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.).

Comey, who was fired by President Trump in May 2017, tweeted on Thanksgiving that he received a subpoena from House Republicans to testify.

"I’m still happy to sit in the light and answer all questions. But I will resist a 'closed door' thing because I’ve seen enough of their selective leaking and distortion," Comey tweeted. "Let’s have a hearing and invite everyone to see."

I despise Gowdy. Don’t trust him a bit.

Trey Gowdy is a swamp rat. My guess is he has webbed feet like a frog. He is leaving at the end of the year, thank God.
He should just shut up, swim away and
find a decent barber.

I used to be in complete thrall with Gowdy.

Now...?

I just don’t know.

No way I would allow Comey to call the shots.

He wants an audience to tip his cronies off for a reason.

Now that Rosenstein run out the clock on Nunes, I doubt we ever learn the truth.

Some say POTUS is convinced that releasing the docs will result in obstruction of justice charge.

Does he get a lot of bad advice????? I would like him to hire Mark Levin for a week or two.

The point of all this is to simply stall the hearing until the congressional break and than it can disappear when dems take over.

All this does is produce some needless conversation from empty talking heads on TV. It is a simple continuation of the strategy to run out the clock on the statute of limitations for democrat criminal activity. When all is said and done no ne will face justice and they'll all make a pile of money writing books about ow they were abused.

Gowdy is a duplicitous back stabbing traitor of the worst kind.

That may be the worst case evaluation. Best case would be he has no idea how to bring an investigation to a successful result.

Further, he is only proposing the obvious with the prompt public release of a security-scrubbed video and transcript of a closed hearing as a means of defeating misleading leaks. In fact, Goodlatte most likely already raised the possibility.

We should just hope it is sworn testimony and not a Clinton-like charade.

Gowdy’s track record speaks for itself. Every time things started trending the right way he hit the MSM with the Rat talking points and shut it down. He acted as Rosenweasel’s protector in Congress and made sure the evil little prick stayed on as head of the coup. Gowdy is a nasty little deep state tool. Thank God he’s leaving but he did enormous damage and now the Rats have the House.

"Let’s have a hearing and invite everyone to see"

Of course Comey wants the hearing and wants it in public. He will simply grandstand if they even ask a real question. But mainly he will use the opportunity to bash Trump. Comey leaked classified memos to create the SC and could care less about laws, hearings, testimony, etc. Laws are for little people like his deputy McCabe. McCabe will say the same thing (laws are for Strzok to follow). Strzok is a psychopath who could care less about laws.

No. We don’t need others taking his answers to form theirs.

Why even bother? He and the rest of the Pubs has the last two years to expedite this and get it done and instead we only got to hear more bluster. How much you wanna bet that Lynch ignores the subpoena and nothing happens to her?

I take the opposite stand. Gowdy does a good job in extracting answers. The problem is...the committee has no power other than just that.

Comey wants a Public meeting cuz he knows there can't be a question that has already been answered publicly.

Tape the behind closed doors meeting. Absolutely.

Hold Comey in contempt and put him in jail.

Why are the republicans against a public hearing? Weird I am with Comey on this one.

Catch 22. America wants a public hearing in pursuit of an open, transparent, and honest administration. But a public hearing gives Comey the ability to refuse to answer or providing misleading information for the sake of national security. By granting Comey a public hearing, we lose the ability to get the truth out of him.

A public hearing is just theater where everyone gets, what, five minutes of questioning? They usually spend most of their time puffing themselves up and accomplishing zero. I do believe it’s a lot different in a closed door hearing. Add to that Comey being a pompous jackass who thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room and a public hearing is useless.

Why not do it in public, as Comey has asked?
