THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HARRY WARREN

SUN VALLEY SERENADE: “CHATTANOOGA CHOO-CHOO”

The arranger Van Dyke Parks found these guys singing in a coffee shop, added a few new faces, and brought in Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman and Brian Wilson as background singers. They had one hit in 1967, and this is from their album.

Harpers Bizarre: “Chattanooga Choo-Choo”

Didn’t Woody Herman and the Thundering Herd cover that?

Now I have trains on the brain LOL

I have a theory on why big band went south.

To many mouths to feed, a lot of people still like it, but all those horns, all those paychecks..

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HARRY WARREN

SUN VALLEY SERENADE: “CHATTANOOGA CHOO-CHOO”

Glenn Miller’s band soldiered on after his death in the war, led by several different bandleaders, but preserving the band’s basic sound for the nostalgia circuit. This 1994 recording features Barry backed by the latest incarnation of the band.

Barry Manilow: “Chattanooga Choo-Choo”

National radio networks employed big bands, for their dramas as well as for music shows. Television arrived, people stayed home more often rather than going out. The venues that used to host big bands got fewer.

Unions. Unions killed big bands.

Ahhh, but there was nothing like it. I don’t know about Woody Herman covering it. Probably did....everyone else did. :)

No, it’s Manilow backed by Miller’s band, at least the latest incarnation.

Many of the songs Jimi worked on during the Electric Ladyland sessions were left off the album due to space limitations or because they were incomplete. When Jimi died in September of 1970, he left behind a vast catalog of demos and unfinished works in progress. Some were reworked with studio musicians (i.e. "Crash Landing") by producer/manager Alan Douglas who held Jimi's license agreements until after seemingly endless lawsuits they finally reverted to the Hendrix Family Estate.

In recent years, Jimi's friend and recording engineer Eddie Kramer has remastered much of Jimi's archive of demos, studio sessions and live performances working with Experience Hendrix, LLC which is managed by Jimi's stepsister Janie.
