THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HARRY WARREN

SUN VALLEY SERENADE: “CHATTANOOGA CHOO-CHOO”

Tonight it’s time for a song that has achieved immortality. This is how it looked and sounded in the original movie. That’s a young, unknown Milton Berle in the opening. Tex Beneke and the Modernaires handle first vocal duties, while the young, unknown Dorothy Dandridge teams with the Nicholas Brothers for the finish. This song was #1 on the Hit Parade the day the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor.

Glenn Miller: “Chattanooga Choo-Choo”

The opening line of the song has become such a mainstay of popular culture that Mel Brooks used it in 1974.

Classic line from “Young Frankenstein”

By April 22, 1968 (the date of this out-take), not only had Noel Redding quit showing up, but producer Chas Chandler (The Animals) had stopped coming to sessions as well. He wanted Jimi to record 3 minute singles for pop radio that he had managed to coax on Jimi's first two albums. Jimi was having none of it, rehearsing this ultimate 18 minute song-poem until Chas was simply bored, had no input and walked away leaving Jimi in charge of his own artistic direction. A later take from this session with Mitch on drums would ultimately provide the Master for the song's first section. Seperate sessions on May 8 and 22 provided the final components, including flute overdubs by Traffic's Chris Wood.

Noel Redding is missing on many of the tracks and sessions for "Electric Ladyland", Jimi's third album which featured two discs and dozens of personnel. Even though Jimi used Noel's song "Little Miss Strange" on the final project, Noel had grown weary of showing up at the Record Plant in New York for a 6:00 PM session only to have Jimi show up at 3:00 AM with an entourage of hangers-on. With the exception of "Voodoo Chile" which featured the Jefferson Airplane's Jack Cassidy on bass, Jimi overdubbed many of the bass parts himself. Noel Redding became enough of a malcontent that he eventually stopped showing up to sessions at all. He was eventually replaced in Band of Gypsys with Jimi's Army buddy Billy Cox.

~ Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Miles (Drums), Mike Finnigan (Organ) & Freddie Smith (Sax) ~

Before he turned to rock and roll, Haley was working a genre called Western Swing. This is from 1954.
