Police struggle to recover body of US missionary killed by remote island tribe
FoxNews.com ^ | Nov 22, 2018

John Allen Chau was killed last week by North Sentinel islanders who apparently shot him with arrows and then buried his body on the beach, police say.

But even officials don't travel to North Sentinel, where people live as their ancestors did thousands of years ago, and where outsiders are seen with suspicion and attacked.

"It's a difficult proposition," said Dependera Pathak, director-general of police on India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where North Sentinel is located.

"We have to see what is possible, taking utmost care of the sensitivity of the group and the legal requirements." ..."

Police are consulting anthropologists, tribal welfare experts and scholars to figure out a way to recover the body, he said.

While visits to the island are heavily restricted, Chau paid fishermen last week to take him near North Sentinel, using a kayak to paddle to shore and bringing gifts including a football and fish. ..."

he wrote about his visit and left his notes with the fishermen. He returned to North Sentinel the next day, Nov. 16.

What happened then isn't known, but on the morning of the following day, the fishermen watched from the boat as tribesmen dragged Chau's body along the beach and buried his remains. ..."

Chau was apparently shot and killed by arrows, but the cause of death can't be confirmed until his body is recovered, Pathak said. ..."

"He didn't go there for just adventure. I have no question it was to bring the gospel of Jesus to them," Staver said.

Staver said Chau's last notes to his family on Nov. 16 told them that they might think he was crazy but that he felt it was worth it and asked that they not be angry if he was killed.

He died trying to make a name for himself and write a book and be paid to be on TV.

You knew him?

A friend of mine grew up in a French colony in Africa with his missionary parents. He has all sorts of interesting stories about his childhood.

He is now a retired airplane mechanic and we brought him along many times when we were looking for a small airplanes to purchase. One time we were waiting for the ferry back to the mainland on a small island. A group of black men were ahead of us at the ferry landing with a “boom box” playing loud offensive rap music. My friend said loudly, “This takes me right back, right back to Africa, with the heathens dancing around the fire, beating their drums and shouting out their devil worshipping music. Yep, it takes me right back to Africa”. He said it loudly enough that some of the young black men heard him and they started pointing at us and gave us menacing looks.

For a moment I thought that we might be in for some trouble. But my friend was tall with an imposing build; he had a full beard at a time. He looked a little like Fidel Castro only taller and much more muscular, or Bluto from Popeye. And he was wearing dirty coveralls from doing the airplane inspection. He stared back at them with no sign at all of being intimidating. He made some type weird motion with his hands and the whole group immediately turned around and ran off while calling us racists along with other bad names. I guess they rode another ferry back.

"They buried the body - leave i."

Really? I surprised they didn't cut off his head
and shrink it and cannibalize the rest of his body.

Poorly advised young man.
It may.not have worked given their isolation and privation but a better approach chould have been to research their language to be able to communicate..left sterile gifts (like arrowheads or leather or fishing line or something that could be helpful) and a message of peace and the gospel and contact information and left the island asap....methinks his heart overwhelmed his mind.

“Is a beach not a central location on an island?”

Yes, but the reception of the message is the next step. By what screaming stretch of the imagination would he think that his message would be received, IF he could EVER have made them understand it?

The whole history of the place, the advice of the people who were familiar with the place, witnessed to the fact they would not accept his message, even if they understood it, which they obviously COULD not.

They probably thought he was after their women.

Perhaps they should be given the opportunity to choose civilization and all of its challenges and comforts rather than living in the stone age. Perhaps with all of our faults, we have enough of worth to offer them, they should be afforded the opportunity to choose the great things the world has to offer, music, literature, art, poetry, dance, astronomy, all the philosophies, all the theologies, great cuisines, sports, and so many many other things. Would any of us choose the short impoverished lives and the crippling superstitions that have prevented them from advancing beyond the stone age? If we wanted to do so, we could, but those of us who do choose such a life, if there are any, are few and far between. In any case, we do have antibiotics, anti/retrovirals, and vaccinations, so is it right to leave them there, isolated and deprived, when if they were given the choice, it is so very unlikely they would chose the lives we have decided for them they must live?

First, of all Father Abraham. Secondly, the Roman Empire, thirdly the Apostles who spread the gospel throughout the Roman Empire, and then later Christian missionaries from Rome who brought Christianity to western-most corners of Europe, and then when Europe again fell into paganism and savagery, the Irish.

Our civilization stands on four pillars, Jerusalem, Athens, Rome and London. Yes, there is corruption because man’s nature is corrupt, but there is also the image of God in our nature as well, and it was at great personal sacrifice. And so we have built the greatest civilization the world has ever known, and sadly the devil has built his civilization as well, inside our borders and without.

I doubt that you, in all your jaded educated snobbery, would like living in the stone age very much.

This story reminded me of Jim Elliot.
******************************

I was thinking the same thing. I wouldn’t be surprised if he saw the film or read the book and was inspired to do the same. Regardless, he tried to fulfill the Great Commission which sadly most of us Christians do not even attempt in our own peaceful neighborhoods. No matter how we humans view his sacrifice God will elevate it and the young man is in Glory now. I pray for his parents to have peace.

“I think he died a martyr.”

He died a lawbreaking idiot who very well could kill all those people by exposing them to disease to which these savages have no natural immunity.

That’s the facts, Jack.

Apparently they had that opportunity and turned it down in no uncertain terms.

What do you want to do, go in there capture them all and force them to change their lifestyle?

What harm are they doing us that we shouldn’t leave them alone?

The nazis and the communists wanted to liberate us from what they thought was our miserable existence, we too turned down that opportunity in no uncertain terms.
