Civil division and its conquests are the true makers of America, and continue to shape its national progressor threaten its undoing. Indeed, the very founding of the United States advanced the principle of civil conflict over all others. Our very identity, from the start, was framed as triumph over the other. We cast them out, like France cruelly expelled their heretic Huguenots in the 17th century. For our part, we drove out 100,000 loyalists we once counted as blood brothers. This civil war itself lasted 20 years, from 1763 to 1783, but the ensuing cold war and residual battles with Britain did not end until 1815.
By then there was another fissure in the nation. After 1815 a new cultural migration began. Young America itself split into two opposed ways of life and two increasingly bitter political identities, which fought another 20-year conflict, from 1857 to 1877. Threats of secession and nullification dominated American politics all the way to 1896 with Plessy v. Ferguson. Only the lucky generations, from the 1930s to the 1970s, could pretend to celebrate something like national unity. Even then, such privilege was the demesne of a single, favored political majoritycompletely coterminous with the prevailing liberal establishment.

the technology exists today to drill down on the money and interests funding both sides of the “debate” ultimately to their own ends.
That money and those interests ALWAYS exist -in all of human history
The war drums will boom the more loudly on each side of the Red and Blue the closer We the People draw near to unhorsing
that money and those interests.
A modern day civil war either needs to be won quickly with armaments or lost slowly with bureaucrats.
—— or lost slowly with bureaucrats.——
or lost slowly with lawyers
It is no longer possible to win with out blood in the streets. There are simply too many of them holding the cities.
The people in the cities will eventually take care of the people in the cities.
It’s worth your time.
One of the best books on Verdun - and WWI in general - I’ve read.
Horne interviewed men who’d been there, fought there, and it’s an amazing read.
I actually had some liberal on the opinion website of the local rag claiming there was no right to self defense with a firearm because is was not specifically stated in the 2nd Amend. His claim was the 2A was all about supporting the state. When I asked if hunting with a firearm was allowed as it was also not spelled out, he accused me of “attacking the messenger”
If those men could see how the country turned out, Lincoln wouldn’t have been able to field a Platoon.
Some Californians are tuned into DiogenesLamp's way of thinking: that somehow they'd be on top of the world if only they could leave the union.
On top of all California's other problems, their wealth depends a lot on the US muscling other countries to enforce our copyright laws.
Without the US having all that power, much of California's wealth would melt away, just as the cotton kingdom's would have when cotton prices fell.
Well it wasn't for lack of trying, but when the rubber met the road your guys just didn't measure up.
Have you watched a full blown tantrum of a spoiled child being told NO? That would be the trigger for many that are considered poor in this country.
We have actual poor people in this country, but those are often ignored. We also have the “poor” that have been spoiled so much by politicians they now believe they have earned their freebies. A welfare mom who has not worked a day in her life other than filling out government forms will tell you she is raising her children on her own. And they believe it.
They don’t know what they don’t know. They don’t know they are out of shape and not in any condition to do physical labor. They don’t know what physical labor is. I have no crystal ball, no idea what may happen but you seem to think people will think this out and decide not to act. The thought process of the spoiled is probably no where near the common sense you apply to it.
In the past revolutions were started by desperate people, but some of these spoiled people would feel desperation if their smart phone fails to work.
Regarding our many past discussions, the following caught my eye, from the article:
"In defiant opposition to them were the Northern anti-slavery elites, nowhere as privileged and rich as their Southern counterparts.
The new Republicans were further thwarted by the indissoluble alliance of planter aristocracy and the nations financial hub: New York City.
There was an unholy bond between a dominant slaveholder elite and an equally dominant New York slave-enabling elite.
To make the point, in 1859, New York shipbuilders outfitted 85 slave ships for the hungry needs of the Southern planter class."
The wrong side lost, the republic died and an empire was born.
The Democrats of the 19th century bear no resemblance to the Democrats of the 21st century.
You a have childish view of history and current world affairs. A peaceful disunion onto say 4 independent countries with a mutual defense pact, like NATO, would be ideal.
Studies have been done on this claim and they found both "these United States" and "the United States" used before and after the Civil War, with "the United States" steadily gaining popularity.
But the mid-point of 50-50 usage was around the year 1900, when acts of Congress made "the United States" official.
I can imagine many simply going insane if their smart phone quit working, many are so completely reliant on technology to passively occupy themselves. I can imagine giant land whales lumbering in the streets, howling for their phones to start working again.
I know that there has never been sustained civil unrest when the poorest are so well fed, if not healthy, and so entertained. That could be just because it has never happened before. Like I said, it is hard for me to imagine them choosing the hardship that would come from months of taking it to the streets.
Freegards
"Both sides rush to tear down the constitutional order. Just since the 2016 election, we have witnessed a rolling thunder of Blue and Red elite rhetoricpacking the Supreme Court, abolishing the Electoral College, repealing the Second Amendment, wholesale state nullification of federal law, shackling of voter rights, and Deep State invocation of the 25th Amendment. These are all potential extremities of action that would not only dismantle our constitutional order, but also skew it to one sides juridical construct of virtue, thus dissolving any semblance of adherence to law by the other. Over time each party becomes emotionally invested in the lust to dismantle the old and make something new."
Only in the uses & effects of the latest technology, which nobody in 1910 fully understood.
But war, conquest and empire are built into the very definitions of words like "kings" & "royalty", it's their original raison d'etre, and nobody in 1910 expected them to completely abandon it.
By 1910 the middle-aged German Kaiser had long pondered how to make his next move to increase Germany's "lebensraum" and enslave Eastern Europeans for Germans' benefit.
In 1910 the Kaiser's Schlieffen Plan was already five years old!
Long before 1914 the Kaiser had begun building up his armies & navy and walking diplomatically up to the precipice of war before backing down.
In 1914 he again walked up to the precipice... and this time, leaped.
The French weren’t innocent in fault for WWI, either; they were still pissed about having their asses handed to them in the 1870 war with Germany and being humiliated.
They were teaching “Revanche!!!” in the grade schools for forty years prior to WWI, so those fires were already primed and stoked for conflict.
Technology wade the slaughter industrial.
