The night before the midterm elections, House Speaker Paul Ryan touted tax reform 2.0, the economy, and the rebuilding of the United States military as the agenda accomplishments of the Republican-controlled Congress.
Frankly, our members feel pretty good because they have a really good message I mean look at what weve just been able to achieve in Congress with the President in the last two years, Ryan told Fox News Bret Baier. A record economy, the military being rebuilt, people feeling better about things wages growing faster than they have since before the recession.
The accomplishments of the GOP Congress, though, have been slim with Ryan in charge.

Ryan is married to a Democrat lobbyist. What more can you say? They didn’t buy that mansion on $174,000 per year.
Conservatism without Nationalism is like Faith without Works.
Not to mention that fact Republicans raised taxes on a good portion of their base (suburban Conservatives in Blue states, where they lost seats).
I think that is incorrect. The two big promises of 2016 were Repeal Obama care and Build the Wall. Those were items a majority of Republicans agreed about. Neither got done, thanks in large part to Paul Ryan. They ran on repealing Obama care for 6 years and when it came to clutch time, nobody in “leadership” had an actual plan ready. Ryan obstructed the wall at every opportunity. I think it is clear that not keeping their biggest promises is why they lost.
“Take a wealthy suburbanite in the NYC or D.C. area who drives a BMW or Honda SUV, and a Kentucky libertarian with NRA stickers all over his Ford or Dodge pickup truck. These were part of the GOP base for most of the last 25 years, yet there almost no overlap in the priorities they have, and you probably couldn’t find three issues where these two voters would agree on a solution. “
They agree on Taxes, Spending and the Rule of Law. There’s 3.
And the 2017 “tax cut” actually raised taxes on one of the persons you mentioned. Many such persons felt betrayed.
Loser (and cuck) is no way to go through life. This never - Trumper is a pathetic disgrace . Any success for MAGA is in spite of him.
Less than 50% of Americans pay federal taxes so tax reform 2.0 is a loser. The wall, nationalism and fighting the left like Trump would have been winning issues.
Ryanm doesn’t care. He’ll still go to all the posh DC soirees because he’ll be toting a fat K St checkbook.
More likely he was never who you thought he was prior to 2012. He was just better at hiding it.
The pain felt, by citizens living in states that had SALT deductions, had to occur. How else would you get rid of the injustice to the rest of the states who had to pick up the slack and pay for those citizens’ federal share of taxes. SALT deductions are truly bad policy that needed to be removed for the good the the nation as a whole.
Yes it probably cost votes, because people fight hard not to look past the tip of their own nose.
One of the reasons for keeping ryan as speaker was that he was a great fund raiser. Those fund were given to deep state republicans who lost elections. Ryan never failed to criticize Trump and is now trying to take credit for Trump’s accomplishments.
Now, we need to rebuild the Republican Party into a ProTrump, ProAmericaFirst Party...and we need to do it before 2020...or we’ll lose...
I could not agree with you more.
In 2016 two constituencies of the GOP converged. One was new, namely, the forgotten men and women of predominant rural America left behind by globalism. Trump brought these voters back to the polls. The main issue for this group was and is immigration.
The other was a familiar constituency of rich suburbanites. They suffered under Obamacare because it was and is hitting this group right in the wallet.
The suburbanites hated and hate Trump personally because, well, their eroudite/cocktail party nature views Trump as a vulgar ruffian. Nonetheless, they pulled the lever for him because they had Obama fatigue, hated Hillary and were of the impression that the GOP was actually serious about doing something.
The result was a coalition that gave us a victory in 2016. Look no further than PA to see the power of that coalition as two polar opposite GOP candidates in Toomey and Trump prevailed.
Sadly, the Ryan lead GOP House (I think purposefully) showed the surbanites that they had nothing. This left Trump as the sole selling point for them to vote GOP. Without the issues behind the GOP, that was a non-starter for this group who either sat it out or OUTRIGHT turned on the GOP.
And turn they did. You should see the local Ds who got elected where I am to offices NEVER held by a D before.
“How else would you get rid of the injustice to the rest of the states who had to pick up the slack and pay for those citizens federal share of taxes.”
You’re ignorance is showing.
People in the Blue States that ended up paying more as a result of a reduction in SALT deductions...are in states that subsidize YOUR state at the Federal level. And that’s because those states already pay more in Federal tax than they get back in Federal expenditures of any kind.
In fact, they enable your state, and most of the states in the union to have low state taxes because of this imbalance.
Thank you.
The Chamber of Commerce (Bush/McCain/Romney/Ryan) Republicans now belong more to the right wing of the Democrat Party than they do to the GOP. Greedy, unethical people who love money above all else. I’m so glad to be rid of them!
Good post. The fascinating thing about PA is that Toomey and Trump were not elected by the same coalitions of voters. Trump got a lot of votes from Democrats and independents in central PA who didn’t vote for Toomey ... while Toomey had strong support in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh suburbs from Republicans and independents who didn’t vote for Trump.
Nobody really wanted to repeal ObamaCare. Oh, these voters ran around and said they wanted ObamaCare repealed ... but what they really wanted was to pay lower premiums. They love most provisions of ObamaCare, and are simply so damned clueless that they don’t see the link between the ridiculous regulations of ObamaCare that the love so much and the skyrocketing premiums they are paying.
