Without saying a word, a mysterious man in black clutching a semi-automatic pistol opened fire on a California bar packed with college students celebrating "country night" Wednesday claiming the lives of at least 12 patrons, including a veteran sheriff's sergeant nearing retirement, before officers found the gunman dead.
Hundreds of people -- including students from California Lutheran University, private Christian school Pepperdine University and California State University Channel Islands -- were inside Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, Calif., for the country music event when shots suddenly rang out at about 11:20 p.m., Ventura County police said. Police said at least 30 shots were fired and the gunman, armed with a .45-caliber handgun, used a smoke device to disorient and confuse his targets.

News says pistol so far - with extended magazines.
Used a .45 pistol... which the Brit press reported as a “sub machine gun” with an “extended” magazine. Geez, the editors these days.
The Sheriff’s Deputy was going to the sound of fire when he was killed.
An American hero.
But there are additional options depending on the situation that would allow for a longer term of treatment/commitment. Be interesting to see if the perp’s parents availed themselves of any of them.

Sheriff at the news conference just said he shot the security guard at the door, then immediately upon entering the bar shot one or two more guards. Then he was free to shoot the patrons of the bar.
The gunman’s contact with LE was a 5150 check and LE made the judgement to let him go. LE aren’t licensed mental health care professionals.
The Sheriff is giving a presser now. He answered a question as to what the undercover officers did, and he Answered, “One parent told me that an officer stood between the shooter and his daughter”. There were 150 to 200 in the bar and undoubtably the armed offduty guards saved lives. The statement “The officer stood between the shooter and my daughter” should be the new mantra to describe the importance of the officers...
Praise for officers who do their duty! We’ve had cases where that wasn’t so ...
Okay, so assault weapon was the wrong choice of words but a rapid firing gun.
The Ventura County Sheriff just said today is his last day on the job as he is retiring. How sad to have had this happen on his last day. County Sheriff’s are elected in CA.
Well, in every State in which I’ve had a CCW, you were prohibited from carrying in bars...
