Prior to the election, there was speculation that President Trump wanted Republicans to lose the House in order to ensure his 2020 re-election by running against the crazy House Dems, led by Nancy Pelosi, whose verbal inartfulness is already legendary. On the campaign trail, he warned his supporters about the dangers of a Pelosi speakership, but I am pretty sure he recognizes in her the possibilities for deal-making. Support for that hypothesis comes from the congratulatory call he made to her last night, and from his tweet this morning endorsing her for Speaker.
In all fairness, Nancy Pelosi deserves to be chosen Speaker of the House by the Democrats. If they give her a hard time, perhaps we will add some Republican votes. She has earned this great honor! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 7, 2018
While there is certainly an element of trolling here, Trump is also likely to want to deal with another experienced deal-maker. Pelosi is a lot smarter than she sounds, and knows how to strike a bargain. She also understands that impeaching Trump (or Justice Kavanaugh) would be suicidal for the Democrats. Last night, she told PBS that impeachment “is not what our caucus is about”:
"For those who want impeachment, that's not what our caucus is about," House Minority Leader @NancyPelosi tells @JudyWoodruff. pic.twitter.com/KJksuVATQU — PBS NewsHour (@NewsHour) November 6, 2018
I already look forward to the intra-party conflict ahead for the Democrats as the impeachment-crazed haters run up against the party establishment. I would not rule out her gaining the speakership with GOP votes. Trump knows that aging establishment versus new generation radical crazies (Alexandria Occasional-Cortex, for example) is a fault line

Also, there is nothing they can do about the sealed indictments.
Best part: Nobody is going to challenge her for the gavel. He knows that too.
Pelosi is a lot smarter than she sounds...
Wow. I guess I don’t know her on a personal level to say Definitely that she’s not.
Maybe she says REALLY STUPID things on purpose.
Nancy Pelosi, Maxine Waters, Elizabeth Warren, Hillary Clinton....the fresh, young faces of todays Democrat Party!
LMAO!
Such babes!!
POS Pelosi should be in prison in the same cellblock as POS Paul Ryan. Block 21.
They are now boxed in - either they select somebody else and it looks like he made them switch with this stunt, or they select her and it looks like he told them what to do.
So now he'll get to go toe-to-toe with this brain-damaged lightweight who has a very thin majority, half of whom are nuts.
Look at the wreckage that was once Jeb Bush to see Nancy's future.
“Support for that hypothesis comes from the congratulatory call he made to her last night”
Huh?? Has there ever been a president in modern history who hasn’t congratulated the new speaker of the house?
Weak argument
You joke, I know, but there are some waiting in the wings like my D congressperson Cheri Bustos, who is moving up the ladder. She is a moderate on most issues, is very good at the retail politics stuff, and does a very good job of staying in touch with her constituents, and she is articulate enough to be considered a “rising star” by the leftist media.
The point is, she could become Speaker and serve for 20 or 30 years, and would be competent and sane. That’s why Trump is right in begging for more of Nutty Nancy. The less competence and sanity the Dems have in the House, the better off we are. The Senate is our fortress.
friends close, enemies closer
She is not the new speaker of the house. She needs to run and get elected. The Dems may decide they want new blood. She wont be the new speaker until the next term.
Frankly, I would prefer her to someone more sane, but the Dems are just insane enough to elect her. Trump is going to have a field day with Pelosi at the helm.
Something like that.
Nancy Pelosi is no match strategically for DJT, and moreover, so arrogant that she’ll ignore the smarter people in her party.
She’s a perfect foil.
Ryan? Ex-VP candidate and nominal head of the GOP? Can’t have a war with a guy like that. Now he’s gone, and he’ll need a new line or work or a change of parties. He’s completely and fatally compromised in the same crap McCain was in. Very bad stuff.
Not winning MT will sting. Losing the House is likely going to end up being indispensable. Contrast/context is king.
The House will now be an asylum with Pelosi as the inmate in charge. Pelosi will not be able to control the leftist loons now drunk on their election win and the House will be an endless circus of hearings and investigations aimed at Trump and Kavanaughs impeachment. Any insanity in the form of a bill coming from the House will be DOA in the Senate or with Trumps veto. The American people will grow tired of the insanity by 2020 and Trump will be re-elected in a landslide.
There is THAT ..... President Ttrump towers over Pelosi in 3D chess.
Agree, this benefits Trump (as it did for his predecessors) as he can now run 2020 campaign on “Blame Nancy and the Dems” when his agenda is tanked. Speaker Ryan was a complete failure but hard for Trump to blame his own party for failing to pass what is needed.
It will be interesting to see if Trump tacks left to compromise (as Clinton did with Newt to pass welfare reform) or simply slams the House at every opportunity. Stay tuned.
Not a chance. He’ll tack right, especially on the wall. Caravan is still out there, and both right and left fear it. (as an example).
FISA will be declassed. More will follow that. It’s going to be fun.
