The legal fight over a 2016 lower court ruling upholding Obama-era net neutrality regulations aimed at ensuring a free and open internet - rules that have since been repealed by President Donald Trumps administration - came to a formal end on Monday, with the U.S. Supreme Court declining to take up the matter.
The Trump administration and internet service providers had asked to justices to wipe away the ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit that had temporarily preserved the net neutrality regulations championed by Democratic former President Barack Obama. But the justices refused to hear the appeals, leaving the lower court ruling in place.
The brief court order noted that three of the courts conservative justices, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch, would have thrown out the appeals court decision. Chief Justice John Roberts and new Trump appointee Brett Kavanaugh were both recused from the case.
Obamas rules, intended to safeguard equal access to content on the internet, were opposed by Trump, a Republican.

Temporarily is the key word here. Al Reuters is trying hard to deceive the reader. Translation: they gone.
Finally....
The Executive Order which was going to turn Facebook into the Internet Gatekeeper for the USA has been killed.
We better win tomorrow. Appears we have need of some legislation we aren’t going to get with Democrats in power.

“net neutrality regulations aimed at ensuring a free and open internet”
Right...they would make sure everything was “fair”.
A SCOTUS smackdown would have prevented any future Democrat POTUS from bringing them back. This development leaves them on life support in cryogenic suspension.
Trump should issue a set of regulations ordering social media companies to quit censoring speech and call it “net neutrality”.
Love to see the heads explode on that one.
“Chief Justice John Roberts and new Trump appointee Brett Kavanaugh were both recused....”
WTF wid dat?
The Dummies are furious! They are counting on re-asserting net neutrality after Trump loses in 2020.

We need to hammer the leftist justices with a recusal scoreboard.
Dems zero recusals, Reps 10,000+.
This is just more leftist bullshit!!!
ooks like 3 women are Obama loyalists.
I have mixed feelings about net neutrality. Those of us who have cut the cable and are using the Internet to access movies and cable networks are now being hit with bandwidth limits by the cable companies from whom we get Internet services. Of course the movie and cable channels they peddle in high price no choice packages are not restricted, but if we want to access our own choice of cable and movie channels through third parties we get loading issues or bandwidth overage charges. To me this is anti competitive. If I purchase a given amount of bandwidth what I access with that bandwidth is my business and should not be throttled back by my ISP to benefit their competing services. I also have a huge issue with municipal cable franchises. These are little more than camouflaged taxes on cable service and give consumers fewer choices for Internet access.
Thank you for pointing out that calling for internet providers to be treated like public utilities and provide their services without discrimination is NOT insane Communist stuff.
Hope that evil bwitch Bader Ginsurg and that sob Breyer are forced to retire soon!
Bandwidth hogs should pay more. Why should I subsidize your movie watching?
It will all be academic once 5G is in place. Most folks will be able to access the internet and therefore internet streaming via 5G with faster speeds and eventually lower costs.
“I also have a huge issue with municipal cable franchises.”
Demand that your local government get out of the cable regulation/franchising business. Mine did 25 years ago.
For many areas served by multiple technologies, including satellite and phone-line services, cable is no longer a monopoly.
Most places are not served by multiple technologies. Some rural locations are not able to get decent service from ONE technology.
My choice where I live is between Verizon and Comcast. I loathe them both.
