Tala and Rotana Farea, the sisters from Saudi Arabia whose bodies were found taped together in New York City's Hudson River last week, were said to have preferred suicide over returning to their home country
According to police. Dermot Shea, chief of detectives for the New York City Police Department, said "sources" in Virginia, where the Farea sisters had previously been living, informed investigators ...(snip).. would "rather inflict harm on themselves and commit suicide than return to Saudi Arabia."

It does not sound like suicide, it sounds like honor killing.
Two sisters committing suicide? They won’t choose drowning, pills maybe, gunshot maybe, but they are not gonna tape themselves together and jump in a river. I don’t care what race or culture they are from, it won’t happen.
Maybe they were doing a Willa Cather "Paul's Case" thing.
Like Henry Marshall who was hot on the trail of Lyndon Johnson’s buddy Billie Sol Estes. Marshall became so despondent he killed himself with a bolt action .22 rifle. Coroner ruled he shot himself 5 times in the torso. Lot of effort, working the bolt, shooting, working the bolt again, etc. Sounds like the NYPD is afraid of telling the truth, don’t want to upset members of the Religion Of Peace.
The sisters were Saudi Arabian nationals.
The Farea family moved to the U.S. from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in mid-2015, AM New York reports, and lived in Fairfax, Virginia.
They had a history of going missing from home.
According to the New York Times, Tala and Rotana had initially been reported missing in December 2017. When Fairfax police found them, the sisters were placed in a shelter after alleging abuse and asking for protection. They were then reported missing from that facility at the end of August of this year.
The NYPD emphasized that the “duct tape was not binding them” but “keeping them together” and that “it’s entirely credible that they entered the water alive.”
On Wednesday, October 24, two women were found floating in the Hudson River, near the 68th Street pier in New York City. They were fully clothed and their bodies were duct-taped together at their waists and ankles.

BTW, if you want to kill your self painlessly. Take your car to a room, like your garage if you have one, and leave the car running while you inhale the carbon monoxide. Or if you don't have a room, run a pipe into your vehicle.
Pretty much any time of the year, extended time in the Hudson would have led to hypothermia.
oh sure, they just taped themselves together with their arms down by their sides. Happens every day.
It would be a completely believable scenario if this had been Arkansas.
Why couldn’t they just flee to another State?
