Tala and Rotana Farea, the sisters from Saudi Arabia whose bodies were found taped together in New York City's Hudson River last week, were said to have preferred suicide over returning to their home country
According to police. Dermot Shea, chief of detectives for the New York City Police Department, said "sources" in Virginia, where the Farea sisters had previously been living, informed investigators ...(snip).. would "rather inflict harm on themselves and commit suicide than return to Saudi Arabia."

Typical media subterfuge. The photo I saw elsewhere showed them duct taped together as one, face to face, mummy style, which means someone else had to bind them, which sounds very little like suicide.

I’m thinking the part about the sisters wanting to stay in America and not return to Saudi Arabia is very true
Very skeptical of the suicide claim

Even without the picture, instinct would instantly kick in and they would try to go for air. A single wrap of tape isn’t going to hold that or hold them together for long. They had to be taped together with several wraps. Each wrap decreases the chance of it being a suicide.

The picture confirms the claim that they were indeed taped together. It also would show how the were taped together. That may show how they could have taped themselves together to commit suicide.
While what you say is true, if the desire to kill oneself is great, that may provide the necessary dedication to resist and overcome that instinct.
For example: I could never kill someone, unless they were providing what I perceived as a clear threat of doing harm to me or my family. So while my instinct is to not kill, it does not render me incapable of overcoming that instinct.

Doesn't sound like two girls who planned to commit suicide.
