Railway police said 60 people died in a "freak accident" which happened when the sound of fireworks at the Dussehra festival on the outskirts of Amritsar made it impossible for people to hear the commuter train bearing down on them.
At least 50 injured people were admitted to hospital.
A witness said the train did not even sound its whistle as it sped past the site.
"Why did authorities allow the fireworks display so close to the railroad track?'" he asked.
Punjab's Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said he was rushing to Amritsar to supervise relief and rescue operations.
"District authorities have been mobilised on war footing," he tweeted.
Local television stations showed images of angry and distraught locals, including a weeping mother who had just lost a child in the tragedy.

60 people in India? That’s something like 0.00000000000002% of the population.I’ll bet more people than that are killed by snakebite in a given day.
“A witness said the train did not even sound its whistle as it sped past the site.”
Engineer: “Did you hear something?”
Asst engineer: “No sir.”
Engineer: “Well good. Bump up the speed a little. We’re three minutes behind schedule.”
Asst engineer: “Yes sir.”
One article said the train didn’t even stop after it hit all those people, but that’s a little hard to believe.
Who watches fireworks on a train track?
Easy way to avoid this sort of thing: don’t just stand on railroad tracks.
That depends on how well behaved one thinks Indian crowds might be.
mass transit kills
“That depends on how well behaved one thinks Indian crowds might be. “
That’s a valid point. The crowd would probably’ve dragged the train crew off the train and torn them limb-from-limb.
Fecal coliform probably kills more than snakebites in that filthy s***hole.
1.7 billion people, less than 30k public toilets. (Facepalm)
Is it too hard to stay off the train tracks? Many cultures lack the ethic of personal responsibility. My town has two sets of tracks each with two sets of rails and we have deaths on the tracks. No one ever blames the trains or the railroad or its employees. But then its a solid Red town and county.
Rule #1 Stay off railroad tracks ...
One article said the train didnt even stop after it hit all those people, but thats a little hard to believe
Depending on how fast train was moving and how heavily loaded can take up to mile to stop ,
Here’s a little bit of thinking way way outside the box. Crazy thinking but how about not standing in the middle of the train tracks, huh?
Idiots?
There is at least one death every week in uber lib Austin, TX of idiots who think they can cross the freeway with vehicles zipping along at 60 mph.
Some of those people may have been related to Elizabeth Warren.
Yes, the train blew the whistle.
That’s not fireworks but a bonfire.
Yeah because in blue states its smart to stand in front of tracks cause we blame the train. Now I know why I dont so ate monthly anymore.
This should be called red state republic.
Every time I get close to thinking red state folks are really sharp a dull blade like you comes along :):)
