Courtney’s Restaurant and Catering owner Tom Courtney said he’s experienced a strong social media backlash because he rented the event room at his Mt. Juliet business to U.S. Senate candidate Rep. Marsha Blackburn on Saturday.
Courtney said he’s been called a Nazi, an abuser, had his life threatened and said his staff has been verbally attacked.
Hundreds of posters on social media said they would boycott his restaurant because it was a local venue to Blackburn, who is running for a seat in the U.S. Senate against former Democratic Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen.
“People have posted they love our food, but will no longer come to the restaurant,” Courtney said Monday. “I have never in my life experienced such a thing. It’s scary.”
Courtney said he didn’t file a police report about the threats.
“At first, I didn’t make a deal,” he said. “Right to free speech and everything. I don’t need to expose the idiots who are keyboard crazy and damage a small local business. The ghosts behind their posts. It will blow over. I’m just blown away though.”
The long-time restaurant owner has a meat-and-three located on North Mt. Juliet Road and has a meeting room he rents out nearly every day to musicians, local clubs and other groups. He said if the Bredesen campaign called tomorrow to rent the room, he’d say yes. It’s business for a small business trying to eke out a living.

Trust that the good people will outnumber the bad. When I read about a similar situation in Michigan back in 2016. I ordered 56 lunches to be delivered to my cousins nearby place of work. The chef/owner was very thankful. God Bless

We know this first hand. Back in 2006 we went against the schools system in NJ because they showed 3rd graders a film and material on “gay families”. We had death threats, simple threats, called racists, bigots and homophobes, had our bank account compromised, shunned by the PTA and teachers and even many of our neighbors. It was scary, but God took care of it....these people will NEVER ever quite-—never. We need to stand arm and arm no matter how tired we get, every single day!

I looked at the poster Facebook pages for a few of them. They might be alternative identities, but the identities were long-standing crazy liberals!!!
If Jeb Bush was president, they wouldn’t be doing this. This is about trying to retake control of the House and Senate in order to neuter Trump. They may be able to get away with this stuff in restaurants in ultra-liberal Washington DC, but red state left-wing snowflakes don’t seem to understand the kind of damage they will do in state and local races with their attempts to show their sjw bonafides.
They don’t seem to recognize that we are Republic. I’m waiting for Hillary Clinton to declare that we should do away with individual Congressional races and have just one big national Congressional popular vote.
