NBC Issues Correction Two Days After Falsely Claiming Trump Called Gen. Robert E. Lee ‘Incredible’

On Friday, NBC News reported, and tweeted, that President Donald Trump praised Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee as “incredible”. But on Sunday, NBC had to correct that tweet since, as it turns out, Trump was actually praising Union General (and future U.S. President) Ulysses S. Grant in the clip.

“An earlier tweet misidentified the general President Trump described as ‘incredible’ at a rally in Ohio,” they tweeted. “It was Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, not Gen. Robert E. Lee.”

That’s a pretty big difference.

That was the tweet on Friday. The correction came as a reply to that tweet on Sunday.

CORRECTION: An earlier tweet misidentified the general President Trump described as “incredible” at a rally in Ohio. It was Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, not Gen. Robert E. Lee. An attached video clip lacked the full context for Trump’s remark. Here is the full clip. pic.twitter.com/NZHj3Q2dHL

— NBC News (@NBCNews) October 14, 2018

The story, which rocketed across the web, claimed that Trump was saying Robert E. Lee was the “great general” who “drank too much” but was “incredible’. In reality, as one can tell by watching the full clip, those remarks were directed to General Grant.

Trump said the state of Ohio gave the country a “general who was incredible. “He drank a little bit too much,” said Trump. “You know who I’m talking about right?”

The south was the Democrats the north was with Lincoln a Republican. My respect to General Lee. My loyalty is to the Union. There are reasons the not so civil war split familys. A lot of good men died on both sides. The left if allowed to will prove it can be done again. My loyalty remains the same.

Grant was a very smart guy. He wrote one of the best selling books of all times. He won the war. He ran the country. He slept along side his men in battle. He was a better horseman, better general, better writer than the rest of the generals. And he did it with a bunch of untrained Illinois regulars who went into the south past their supply lines, living off the land while fighting the confederates on their own soil and winning.

Its true that Grant was poor. He could not handle alcohol. And the cigars he smoked caused the painful cancer that finally killed him. But he was very much against slavery. And he helped reconstruct the south while fighting the democrats who hated Grant.

One can be an incredible leader, even if that person is evil or fighting for the wrong side.

If the Confederates had won the war, Robert E. Lee would be one of the greatest persons or leaders that ever lived.

Seems you discount the mitigating reasons such as Stuart not being where he was supposed to be....................
Guess you’re just a damn yankee and can’t appreciate a true southern gentleman.

That’s the difference between Grant and Lee. Grant understood the changing nature of war and would lead the entire Union army on multiple fronts. Lee was never allowed to lead more than the Army of Northern Virginia and was a general in the Napoleonic mold. Grant knew the war was a campaign, not a decisive battle.

True. Jefferson Davis never allowed Lee that authority.

Yeah, ok.

Do future discussions a favor and try to stow your regionalism when it comes to talking military history.

Yep - he toys with them by intent...almost every time he speaks publicly, he manages to insert at least one line of thought as bait...and they can’t help themselves.

My father’s people... are from Fairfax in northern Virginia, just across the Mason-Dixon line. So it was an honour to play Lee, he was a great general.

The Federal Government is corrupt and the Union is no longer legitimate. Being pro union is to be for corruption and anti (small r) republican.

Grant also believed that the South( any state ) has the right to secede and leave the union. It’s in his memories.
