Jeff Flake: ‘We Can’t Have That on the Court’

As the Senate awaits the results of the FBI investigation into the Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, Jeff Flake, one of the lawmakers who spurred the inquiry, criticized the judge Tuesday for his recent appearance in the upper chamber.

Speaking with Jeffrey Rosen, the president of the National Constitution Center, and Democratic Senator Chris Coons at The Atlantic Festival on Tuesday morning, Flake called the judge’s interactions with lawmakers “sharp and partisan.”

“We can’t have that on the Court,” said the Arizona senator, who didn’t elaborate on which interactions he was referring to.

Thank you for this clarification and I hope it is right,otherwise the nomination is in big trouble regardless of FBI report. if Flake votes no, Collins will vote no, she is in a state where only 36% of voters identify as Republicans. I think Flake is falling for that false adulation from media about being “moderate” , which means as long as he opposes a Republican initiative he gets atta boys. My wife also says that it looks like he gets approval from Coons. He will be dropped like a hot rock once his usefulness is done (defeat Kavanaugh) He has not political future but might get lots more press time and book that the media will fawn over. prayers are needed

This guy is mentally unstable in my opinion. I don’t understand why he isn’t running for re-election. He would have no chance of winning but he apparently enjoys being publicly humiliated and he absolutely loves the spotlight. So why isn’t he running?

I caught up with Flake briefly as he left the event, and asked if this meant he would not vote to confirm Kavanaugh, even if the FBI cleared him by week’s end. He appeared rattled, and his handlers rushed him into the stairwell. “I didn’t say that …” he stammered. “I wasn’t referring to him.”

Flake was clearly referring to the partisanship in general, not Kavanaugh specifically. Furthermore, just two days ago, he explicitly said he's voting for Kavanaugh barring something in the FBI report.
