Voters elected political newcomer Pete Flores to the Texas Senate on Tuesday, flipping a Democratic district red for the first time in 139 years and further bolstering Republicans supermajority in the chamber ahead of the November elections.
A retired game warden, Flores defeated former state and U.S. Rep. Pete Gallego for the Senate District 19 seat after receiving backing from some of the states most prominent politicians, including Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, and U.S. Sens John Cornyn and Ted Cruz.
We conservatives are conservative in the way we make approaches. The gun fights not over until the last shots fired, Flores told the Express-News after Gallego conceded in a phone call just before 9 p.m. The last shots been fired.
Flores win marked an incredible upset in a district that political observers said shouldnt have been competitive for Republicans. Low turnout in special elections and high-level GOP interests in preserving a Senate supermajority helped push Flores across the line, they said.
It will provide a completely unexpected gift for Republicans for the next legislative session, said Mark Jones, a professor of political science at Rice University.

Blue for 139 years, until now.
You can’t spin that.
Whoa you guys see this? FL27 (Ros-Leithen’s seat, which Baris had as a loss): My Shalala is losing by SEVEN in a GOP poll and up by FOUR in a Dem poll in a district Cankles won by 20.
No way Ds can win the House if they lose this seat. This and Faso’s and McSally’s and, I’d say, Yost are absolute must haves.
Kim now up 10 in her CA39 district and I hear Rossi is doing very well in Reichart’s district for two more holds.
Politico article out on how Shalalalala is in "sleep mode" and dems are worried.
My take is, we're running a personable TV anchorwoman and Shalalalalala is not even Hispanic let alone Cuban. She may be well known and well funded but she is definitely not who I would be running in that district. In addition to not being Cuban, she's pushing 80!
There was good news in Faso's seat as well, liberal actress Diane Neal won her legal challenge to stay on the ballot as an Independent, she should steal a few points from the rat.
Young Kim's official portrait is just gorgeous.
Tidmit from the Texas race, in the all-party primary democrats combined for over 60%.
But Republican Flores got 51% of the election day vote, with the rat lead coming solely from early voting.
ROFL!
1) To quote Laz, “Not Guilty.” Wow.
2) I didn’t realize “Law & Order” Neal was on the ballot in Faso’s district. Yes, that should be the clincher.
I'll just leave this here.
NBC (!!) NBC has Cox down only 4 in Kollyfornia.
I am really beginning to believe in the “red wave.”
Given that Democrat held seats ARE Commie Red... it would be flipping the seat to a Republican BLUE.
She’s beautiful
Hopefully this politically and other wise insane development will be stopped in November.
“...Commie Red...”
Yeah, I know about the color flip thing, from back in the day. And it IS more appropriate to label the dems Red - Because they ARE, surely - but the color meme is already out there.
Takes a lot to change it back. Not to say we shouldn’t try, that is...
I’ve been fighting it every day for almost 18 years since the media deliberately chose to flip it and the “Stupid Party” refused to protest. Wrong is wrong, and being called a “Red” is viscerally offensive and an obscenity.
