Voters elected political newcomer Pete Flores to the Texas Senate on Tuesday, flipping a Democratic district red for the first time in 139 years and further bolstering Republicans supermajority in the chamber ahead of the November elections.
A retired game warden, Flores defeated former state and U.S. Rep. Pete Gallego for the Senate District 19 seat after receiving backing from some of the states most prominent politicians, including Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, and U.S. Sens John Cornyn and Ted Cruz.
We conservatives are conservative in the way we make approaches. The gun fights not over until the last shots fired, Flores told the Express-News after Gallego conceded in a phone call just before 9 p.m. The last shots been fired.
Flores win marked an incredible upset in a district that political observers said shouldnt have been competitive for Republicans. Low turnout in special elections and high-level GOP interests in preserving a Senate supermajority helped push Flores across the line, they said.
It will provide a completely unexpected gift for Republicans for the next legislative session, said Mark Jones, a professor of political science at Rice University.

Wait...
Did that say ..."flipping a Democratic district red for the first time in 139 years"???
Yes. Yes it DID say "flipping a Democratic district red for the first time in 139 years."
I mean, for a moment I wasn't SURE it said "flipping a Democratic district red for the first time in 139 years..."
But then, yes, I realized... it DID say "FLIPPING A DEMOCRAT DISTRICT RED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 139 years..."
Wow... that's a helluva "Blue Wave" them there dems got goin'on... Just sayin' allkindasortalike...
Only partly true. The election included Bexar county.
Bingo. I remember when LS previously noted the media tactics on Twitter, Democrat narrowly wins a special election, its a huge front page story and doom for the GOP. Narrow Republican win, it means that the GOP is in trouble and the Rats are going to sweep in November. Big GOP win, like tonight, no mention by the press.
The American Soviet Media knows how to craft their Pravda.
That’s a huge win!
Hillary won district by 12.
Flipping a seat Dems held for 139 years is even better news....... b/c Obama’s dream was to turn Texas blue.
You know,... it must have. “:^)
As the late “3 Stooges” member Joe Besser would say,
“I like it! I like it!
Flores should be known as The Republican Reconstructionist II. And I like what he said when “The work begins tomorrow”.
Hit the ground running and never look back, only forward.
I am so looking forward to the 1st Tuesday in November. . .
cruising through DU and DailyKos, bluemidterms on Reddit. . .
and listening to the lament of Mickey “DUI” O’Rourke, and all the other “near misses” and livid accusations as their blue wave fails to materialize. . .
may it turn out as I’m hoping! 2016 all over again.
I can’t believe they are running
1. An Irishman who pretends to be hispanic
2. who’s been convicted has he not? for dui, hit and run?
Who runs a candidate like that?
Oh and
3. argues for gun control.
in Texas.
and he’s their Golden Boy! Sorry I keep replying to myself. I just can’t believe it.
Yep. He is firmly on the “Ban the AR-15!” bandwagon.
This Texas election has implications far beyond the state of Texas. The result of this huge Republican victory in a heavily Democrat district in Texas bodes well for all Republicans in Texas. The Governor & U.S. Senator election will reveal Gregg Abbott winning his Governor re-election by a majority of a 1.5 million vote majority and Senator, Ted Cruz will win his re-election attempt by a 1 million vote victory margin over his rival, Democrat, Beto O’Roucke.
Folks....it will be “Wendy Davis 2.0” day over again in Texas!!!
Go, Trump, go, Abbott, go, Cruz, go, GOP...GOTV, Go, MAGA!!!
I would like to see Gregg Abbott follow Trump as POTUS, he is the ONLY person I would trust to absolutely follow Trumps MAGA!!!
This district is almost minority gringo
Forty percent Latino
Texas Latinos could surprise us one day especially once you get out of the impoverished valley
I work with a fair number of Amerindian Guats and Mexicans
All I know love Trump
Legal construction trade guys...go getters..
I am not getting to excited by this, the district is hugely Hispanic AND Flores is one of their own, I would think most voted on the name Flores!!! I will take the win however we got it BUT dont read to much into it most folks dont vote because they are educated about the issues they voted an Hispanic person in!!!
Yes...you are right on the money...Greg Abbott is “Awesome”. Texas is darn lucky and blessed to have a leader like Gregg. Ya know, Trump is coming to Texas to have a massive campaign rally there. You can bet your last dollar that Greg Abbott, Ted Cruz & all the GOP candidates will be there in October, 2018!!!
Trump better get a YUGE VENUE for Texas I mean YUGE!!!!!
