Voters elected political newcomer Pete Flores to the Texas Senate on Tuesday, flipping a Democratic district red for the first time in 139 years and further bolstering Republicans supermajority in the chamber ahead of the November elections.
A retired game warden, Flores defeated former state and U.S. Rep. Pete Gallego for the Senate District 19 seat after receiving backing from some of the states most prominent politicians, including Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, and U.S. Sens John Cornyn and Ted Cruz.
We conservatives are conservative in the way we make approaches. The gun fights not over until the last shots fired, Flores told the Express-News after Gallego conceded in a phone call just before 9 p.m. The last shots been fired.
Flores win marked an incredible upset in a district that political observers said shouldnt have been competitive for Republicans. Low turnout in special elections and high-level GOP interests in preserving a Senate supermajority helped push Flores across the line, they said.
It will provide a completely unexpected gift for Republicans for the next legislative session, said Mark Jones, a professor of political science at Rice University.

SORRY for the repeats. phone malfuction.
This is so funny! The street corners are littered with Gellego signs and billboards. Flores signs were hidden around the turn not facing the street cause Gellego hogged up all the space. Gallegos also lost in 2016 running for the Senate. What a repeat loser!
I just stopped by the DUMMIES and could not find a single post about this election. I wonder why they won’t post the results? It”s as if the contest never occurred.
Just giving the gaslight presstitutes their talking points.
The heavily Democrat counties didn’t turn out their voters for the special election. The election was widely advertised, but many still never knew it was on the ballot on Sept. 18. And a state Senate seat in TX is larger than a U.S. House seat from TX. Even GPB endorsed the winner in the last few days.
No, this Flores is very conservative and strongly pro-life.
Republicans need to come out for Konni Burton in Fort Worth, who won the Wendy Davis seat in the state Senate in 2014. She is hard-pressed by a popular liberal, Beverly Powell.
I understand people in FL are “fearful” of GOP nominee Ron DeSantis, who carries Trump’s backing.
“Cruz +9 in latest Quinnipiac poll.”
You know what this means, don’t you? He’s really up minimum 20 pts....
53-47
He beat Pete Gallego: another Hispanic
Now it is up to the party of Trump, to maintain the momentum and perform The Peoples business.
NO complacency! Every vote counts indeed!
LOL!!
WOO HOO!
All those libs collectively wretching....
Smells like...
Hoo hoo, this district includes part of the City of San Antonio. 56% Clinton. Seat is not up again in November, up in in 2020.
It’s just one result but this our first state leg special pickup in a while (there have probably been a couple others this cycle but I can’t think of one).
Rat nominee was Ex-Congressman Pete Gallego who probably won’t get nominated ever again.
An article claims GOP Winner Flores is the first Hispanic Republican in the State Senate, can that be true?
Doesn’t bode well for @FakeMexicanPajamaBoyBetoORouke or for the rat candidate running against Rep. Will Hurd.
New poll has Cruz up 54-45.
