PETER HITCHENS: We're on the brink of war....and nobody has noticed
DailyMail.com ^ | 9/15/2018 | Peter Hitchens

Are we on the brink of a new war?...

They will go to war without waiting for the facts to be checked, and without recalling Parliament.....

he was asked about plans-now being openly discussed at high levels in Washington-for a devastating attack on Damascus.

This will be in response to a supposed atrocity that has yet to take place but about which the Americans openly say they already have evidence-probably an alleged poison gas attack, in which we will see heartbreaking but unverified film of dead or dying children, from propaganda sources, and claims of multiple deaths from untraceable 'eyewitnesses'.....

I have checked several of the Syrian poison gas claims in the past, by reading carefully the reports of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). Here are the two most important: the OPCW never even went to the site of the alleged gas attack in Khan Sheikhoun in April 2017, which was the pretext for a spectacular American cruise missile attack.....

Next came the supposed gas attack on Douma, near Damascus, on April 7, 2018. This was also followed by US bombing of Syria, this time assisted by us and the French.

It was widely claimed at the time that organophosphorus (sarin) and chlorine gas weapons had been used....

one MP (and former Minister) who last week wrongly told a constituent there is 'conclusive evidence' that the Syrian state used poison gas, and that Russia and Syria blocked access to the site.....

In fact, the OPCW report from Douma (this time they actually got to the site) concluded that 'no organophosphorus nerve agents or their degradation products were detected'.

The OPCW is still looking into claims that cholorine was used, but it also made clear that Russia and Syria did not block access to the scene....

The headline on Hitchens blog for this column reads.

"WE'RE ON THE BRINK OF WAR...AND NOBODY SEEMS TO CARE"

He writes the situation from his side of the Atlantic but the same story and situation applies to this side of the Atlantic regarding Syria.

President Trump has called the Syrian leader "Animal Assad" and claims some "humanitarian crisis" will happen if the Syrian government backed by Russia and Iran go after the Al-Qaeda terrorists in northern Syria.

Administration statements and officials warn of a "chemical attack" in Syria that will be responded to quickly.

The Syrians and Russians say fake videos have already been produced of such an attack.

I voted for Donald Trump to keep the USA out of the Syrian war and to focus on this country and certainly not to protect the kind of jihadists (Al Qaeda) using new names in Syria.

Seventeen years after 9/11 the USA looks like its aligned with Al-Qaeda jihadists in Syria.

Just like WWI. Nobody asked the British people if they
wanted to go to war in 1914; the politicians simply committed them on the basis of “executive agreements”.

If you read the full column Hitchens also notes a major consequence of the war-wars in Libya-Syria.

The migrants who have flooded Europe and Canada and been dumped in the US as well.

>>> I voted for Donald Trump to keep the USA out of the Syrian war and to focus on this country

Make no mistake... The Syrian war is NOT about Syria.... It’s about Israel, and who controls the oil coming out of it.

Israel is our ally... and for us to abandon them would be to curse them... and we know what the bible has to say about that.

2,000 people:

EVERY day the equivalent of a very small Mexican town picks up, moves, and crosses the US border.

WE ARE BEING INVADED.

I cannot think of any historical example of a country freely electing to pursue an expensive war that is NONE of it’s business on the other side of the globe...

WHILE BEING INVADED by a people who more and more clearly say this country belongs to them and that WE are the outsiders.

It’s breath-taking.

Simple to ignore a slow-motion invasion is bad enough, but to do it while being told to fight the expensive, religio-ethnic wars of countries is unsustainable and ridiculous.

Let middle-easterners sort out middle-eastern problems.

Do we have enough oil..? That is our singular interest there, nothing more.

“Seventeen years after 9/11 the USA looks like its aligned with Al-Qaeda jihadists in Syria. “

If you look around at history, there is a long list of weird allies. Before WWII the British considered attacking Soviet Russia. It was only after Germany invaded that Stalin turned from a vicious commie dictator to “Uncle Joe.” For what it’s worth, I think Trump leaks stuff to sound like an unhinged, ready to attack anybody crazy. He has shown, though, that he’s crazy like a fox. It’s better that the world’s bad actors are kept off guard than to assure them, as Obama did, over and over, that the US will tolerate anything and do nothing. If you’ve played poker, you understand what Trump’s doing.

The failure to meaningfully secure the southern border with military forces or a wall stands out like a sore thumb.

Instead the Syria thing becomes some horrible thing the USA must get involved in.

Israel says its about Iran and has hit Syria 200 times in the last year, it was recently acknowledged.

The Israelis attacked Damascus International Airport last night.

I think they defend their interests and that’s their business.

But this is about Saudi Arabia and its money and its power over other nations like the UK and US.

The USA is bending to the will of Saudi Arabia and supporting Al Qaeda fighting against Assad in Syria.

I agree with you. If President Trump doesn't get out of Syria and let Syria and their allies clean out the last terrorist stronghold, he loses a significant part of his support. I would've been a Rand Paul Republican, if he hadn't made a mess of his campaign by alienating Deplorables. A very big reason President Trump won is that those who oppose us being the Klingon Empire had nowhere else to turn.

I was one of the first supporters of President Trump, even here on FB. A major reason was I believed he wanted to make hotels and golf courses, not war.

“drivel”

Yep. Absolute crap, lies. Nearly all of it. And easily provable.

We will not end up in a war in Syria or with Russia. Not going to happen.

I think Trump is being misled by leftist controlled military commanders.

Out of the Middle East NOW!

It’s not about OUR oil. It’s about Russia stopping the Saudi gas/oil pipeline to the Med.

If that is built the Russian and Iranian economies are tanked and those governments fall. Taking the straights of Hormuz out of the global equation means nothing but good things for the rest of the world.

Unless you are China or Japan.

single issue abandonment is a foolish issue

It's not single issue abandonment. The central theme of President Trump's campaign was USA first. He also promised to deal directly with leaders. He also assured us he's highly intelligent and can figure things out. He can't figure out that the chemical attacks are bogus? C'mon. He hasn't left Afghanistan or Syria, as promised? He didn't distribute that pile of top security revocations?

Israel and Saudi Arabia are not our friends in this issue. We no longer need ME oil.

If we end up in war in the ME, we'll be flooded with invaders from the south. Our military resources will be depleted. The country will go down because even though the US population has been put in a hypnotic state about the constant warmongering, the ME in flames again will break the trance.

Who is President Trump getting his advice from? Fiona Hill? John Bolton? We DID NOT hire President Trump to get a further entrenched Deep State!

Hitchens always sees himself and Little England as a victim of big, bad USA. Has he yet written about British collusion in trying to hand an American election to Hillary?!

He has. This is from 2017....

PETER HITCHENS: For once Donald Trump is right - these sordid claims stink (and you can take that from a man who knows a lot about seedy stings in Russian hotels)
