New Kavanaugh Disclosure Shows Little Sign of Impeding His Nomination

WASHINGTON — Sudden new revelations in Supreme Court confirmation fights are not new. Anita Hill’s accusations of sexual harassment against Clarence Thomas surfaced after his initial hearings had concluded. Justice Neil M. Gorsuch, President Trump’s first nominee to the court, faced claims that he had plagiarized parts of his book just as his nomination headed toward a Senate floor vote.

Now the bitter and extremely contentious Senate fight over the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh has taken its own post-hearing turn with the disclosure that a top Democrat had for weeks possessed a letter accusing the nominee of sexual misconduct while he was in high school. The development, coming a week before the Judiciary Committee is scheduled to vote on his nomination, did not yet appear to be impeding Judge Kavanaugh’s steady progress toward assuming a seat on the court this fall.

The nugget of truth my be that Kavanaugh and the mystery woman may have been at a party at the same time and that’s it. The accusation could come from a woman who actually knew some of the guys 35 years ago. Or from a woman with access to a yearbook. My GUESS is a bitter cat woman who knew the guys 35 years ago either made something entirely up, or it was like Jim Noble posted. There were times in high school where I liked a girl who didn’t actually like me, or didn’t realize a girl DID like me until she told me years later.

Back in those days, you might think a girl wanted to kiss when she didn’t, or find out later she wanted to kiss (and maybe more) but you didn’t realize it. We didn’t start each date with having our lawyers put together a contract on what each person expected on the date.

I can’t help but being struck by the fact that DiFi’s “bombshell” disclosure of a anonymously-writen letter charging an incident that happened in Kavanaugh’s high school days has gotten a lot more press than the fact that DiFi had a Chinese spy working for her for many years.

If we’re going to save our precious American experiment in self-government, we need to stop supporting folks like Kavanaugh. Not because of stuff like this latest claim, but because of what we actually know he’s done. Folks who’ve been here at FreeRepublic since the Clinton administration can surely understand my disgust at Kavanaugh’s role in covering up the apparent murder of Vince Foster.

Yes, I’m glad that Hillary isn’t president. And yes, I’m glad that Republican voters rejected the whole bunch of GOP big names in the 2015-2016 nomination campaign. But Kavanaugh seems like the kind of nominee that a Bush would have chosen.

It doesn’t matter if it an allegation or rumor. It was meant to lay the foundation for some more rumors to come out to push for an investigation. Just watch...in the coming week two or three more such rumors will surface from the democrats.
