THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HARRY WARREN
GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933
It started as a Broadway play in the years after World War I without music. It was filmed as a silent movie, and now Jack Warner decided to turn it into a musical. Much of the cast of 42nd Street returned in different roles, and Busby Berkeley handled choreography. Warners was making a mint on these films and decided to keep mining that gold.
WERE IN THE MONEY
Looking to combat the Depression, the Warner Brothers musicals not only provided needed diversion from the grim reality of American life but attempted to buck up Americas spirits, which is one way how the studio got its reputation for being socially conscious.
Even though the song is supposed to be totally upbeat, there is that dip into the minor for the middle eight. Ginger even sings it in Pig Latin! The scanty costumes are a reflection that the 1934 production code is just a glimmer in a soon-to-be jaundiced eye.

Well, he did have a different way of looking at things...kind of kaleidoscopically.

My dear Mom (RIP) had an expression when we were young. If someone wanted to get rid of someone, They would “Shuffle ‘em off to Buffalo”.
When I first saw the movie “42nd Street” on TV and heard that song I laughed so hard...as I realized where Mom got the expression.
Oh...in that “We’re in the money”, the set design looks like it may have been done by Ayn Rand! (LOLOL)

GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933: WERE IN THE MONEY
Fred would have killed to have a number like this in one of his RKO musicals. Pandro Berman couldnt ask Harry to contribute songs to his films because Harry was under contract to Warner Brothers, and the studio was making a mint out of his songs, as was Harry. But Fred got his chance to put it on shellac. Thats Fred playing filthy piano.

This is Bing in the 1960s, well past his glory years but now free to stretch his style into different types of jazz.

Hi. Good flight, no delays or anything.
Going to DQ was the first thing they [and we] wanted to do. LOL! Long day with no lunch. And it was on the way into town. Easy-peasy! :)
I was going to do some tunes, but I am whipped, so I think I’ll just hang out while everyone is watching Despicable Me III. I’m not into it. LOL!

GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933: WERE IN THE MONEY
Rosemary turned to the writers of the Great American Songbook in the late 1970s and early 1980s, but she never recorded a disk of Harry Warren tunes. This is a clip from a TV show in the early 1950s. Rosemary was pregnant at the time, which is why she is only shown in her top half. The men in the teller line are the Hi-Los.

Tune in next weekend for more Harry Warren and the Great American Songbook.
