Dick started out as a tenor in male ingenue roles, later shifted to hard boiled roles in film noir, worked as a director and then finished in television with his own anthology series. His death from a heart attack at a young age ended a fine career far too soon.

Bing had left Paul Whiteman to join Guy Lombardo and left his wild days behind. He’s still a borderline tenor, not quite ready to become America’s favorite baritone crooner. His scat singing is a remnant of his days with Whiteman.

HARRY WARREN: AMERICA’S FOREMOST COMPOSER

America’s foremost composer? Hardly. In 1933 one would have to name George Gershwin in that role, and there were other songwriters of the Great American Songbook who would have taken umbrage at handing that title to Harry. But Harry Warren was the foremost composer under contract to Warner Brothers, and the studio decided to film a short subject about Harry to cement bragging rights.

That’s Harry at the piano, age 40, singing. Around 1:40, Mae Questel joins in. She was already the voice of Betty Boop and Olive Oyl, and half a century later she would play Aunt Bluebelle in toilet paper commercials.

If you examine Busby Berkeley’s body of work at the various studios he served at, you’ll notice the man was quite the voyeur.
